Hmm... what do you mean by "floating number"? What we do right now is route all alarms to the engineer currently on-call. Each person can set up their own notification sequence so they get alerted using any combination of phone calls, SMS

We tried to design PagerDuty to minimize the possibility of message storms. We did this by decoupling the sending of alerts from the reception of triggering emails. Specifically, we don't generate new phone calls or SMSes if an already tr

Fair enough. We were trying to replicate the text you would see on an old-school pager. We'll probably update the logo in the future.

AlarmPoint Systems is a competitor, but they sell enterprise software, with the usual enterprise tagline of "call us for pricing and a demo" and 5 digit+ price tag. Another one is ReliableResponse. This is a smaller company, but also enterp

I noticed for my site that we are getting slightly different scores based on whether we submit pagerduty.com or www.pagerduty.com. We have it set up so that pagerduty.com does a 302 redirect to the www. The Voltmeter app should see both of

I agree completely. Etherpad is a lot better than Google Docs. The big reason for me is that it provides instant collaboration. When I type something in, the other people editing the doc can see my changes instantly. For Goog Docs, it takes

There's probably lots of reasons why the over $1000 PC gaming market is in decline. There are the people that just grow out of it (I am one). But the big factor here is that consoles are taking over gaming. It used to be the fact that PCs w

I think it ultimately comes down to price. When the Segway first came out, it was available for pre-order on Amazon for $10000! This is an extremely high price, which is orders of magnitude higher than the alternatives: bicycles, motorized

I don't think it would be socially awkward, because the 2 people involved are not just standing around doing nothing for the 25 seconds; they are both busy tapping their phones. You'll probably be able to cut that time down if you don't use

Yes, I agree. What I would do is I would make sure that all the "or"s on the page line up. Then, I would change each line from being one link to being 2 links, so that the "this" and "that" are both links; clicking on one of them would resu

The thing that really annoys me is that "You are required to contribute a $50 application fee to help cover processing costs." in order to apply. Seems somewhat scammy to me.

I wouldn't pick on MS for having a Mac in the ad. They just probably hired a firm to make their ad (have you noticed how most ads use Macs with stickers over the apple logo whenever they need to show a notebook?). I would however criticize

I listen to a lot of Pandora... but recently, I realized that iTunes has radio stations built in. A really good trance station is Electronic -> ABF Underground.

I am also really interested in a way to start a startup in the US. Also Canadian. Currently, I am working on a TN visa for a big tech company in the US. The TN is a 1 year temporary work permit. Currently, I'm on my second TN; last year, I

pandora.com is really good. When coding, I alternate between trance http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh11364865758277320 and mellow hip-hop http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh236914974523469512

I can't figure out what blog the first section is referring to. Steve Yegge? Raganwald? You have to admit, the third section is a great parody of Joel on Software (ps. buy my stuff).
