Just because you focus on the product does not mean you ship bad code. Nor does a focus on the code mean you ignore the product. I see it more of a philosophical thing - what excites you most? Writing a highly efficient, perfectly formed pi

I think some programmers focus on the code, while others focus on the end product. It is a philosophical difference. The first make great employees. The latter make great start-up founders.

Our web app has recently been hit by a Google algorithm change. Search traffic has fallen off a cliff. If it continues, it could be a threat to our business. We have never done any underhand SEO. We haven't done any SEO at all. People love

He is missing one thing a great start-up engineer should have: a great big chunk of equity, preferably all of it.

I have found StumbleUpon to be by far the best way of generating traffic. It won't work for everyone. Don't bother using it for B2B stuff. But if you create quirky fun content aimed at consumers, it can bring a lot of eyeballs to your site.

I also did not get what Binpress did straight away. It took a good ten seconds or so to figure it out. I think the problem is that one's eye is drawn to the 'Featured' section rather than the 'Build better software' product-explanation sect

I agree with you. Not cool at all. Unfortunately, there is an unpleasant trait that hackers seem to suffer from more than most other people. I call it the 'know it all' complex. Know-it-alls are intolerant of views that are contrary to thei

Not back in Manchester. Still in London. But, yes, Manchester is a great city with a great culture. I have a fondness for the place that I will never have for London, and one day may return. I did not intend to use 'provincial' in any derog

At 33, I was single, penniless and back living with my parents. I had spent my twenties partying and getting drunk, somehow managing to carve out a career as a middling journalist during the sober bits. Journalism does not pay well and I wa

I wonder if setting opacity to 0.999 in CSS would prevent the blurring without stopping scaling on zoom.

Simply a brilliant read. If the business does not work out, perhaps you could get a publishing deal. Hope things turn out well, and looking forward to the next episode in what would make an amazing reality TV show.

I agree. Buying a new painting would certainly encourage and reward creativity, which is kind of the point I am making.

I take what you say but I don't think that the term "throwaway culture" is to do with throwing away broken things. It is more to do with throwing away old or unfashionable things. And actually this desire for better, shinier versions of exi

Limiting use of resources should not be humanity's main ambition. Encouraging human creativity - which buying new things does - is more important, in my view, than minimising use of resources. It is only this generation's environmentalist m

I think buying new things is great, not only in that you get something new and shiny to play with, but it also has great social benefits, stimulating economic growth, rewarding entrepreneurism and people who create things, and creating jobs

The beauty of being both a coder and designer is that you can create a product completely on your own. This makes setting up your own start-up a lot simpler. So, to your question of whether you should focus on one or continue to be generali

But the problem of good and bad companies is not about how much they give to charity. I bet tobacco and arms companies give huge wads to charities but that does not make them good. Good companies are companies whose work (their "cause" enac

You seem to think that the total amount of charitable donations is all important. More is better, seems to be your argument, regardless of where that money goes, where it comes from or what it is spent on. What if all that money went to a c

It's all cash in the end, including equity. That cash could be spent on rewarding staff, reinvesting in the business, angel investing another start-up or on a charity. I personally think 'giving to charity' is the worst option, my reason be
