I'm a Canadian in New Zealand. Rather hilariously, in typical imperial/metric, schizophrenic Canadian style, there's quite a few joint CEO/Managing Directors back home. Managing Director itself is funny. Which is it? Are you managing a bunc

A friend of mine works in film, so I know the ballpark costs from conversations with him. You can find production costs for films on the net fairly easily. Puss in Boots, for example was $130 million and Kung Fu Panda 2 was around $150 mill

For a typical pixar/dreamworks movie, it takes about $1.25 million/per minute of film. It can take a week just do 3 seconds of animation and all the labour is, of course, exceptionally talented and extremely expensive.

As it happens, last night, I came across this talk featuring Jeffrey Katzenburg from Dreamworks Animation: http://te11.techonomy.com/innovation/entertainment-and-techn... In it, he discusses the enormous investment they are making in real

Rabobank has a similar system. Account access requires a keypad widget, an account number, the widget's serial number, a pin and the generated one-time pass. Any transactions require a second one-time pass derived from a different algo.

I came across an article about the Belarus dictatorship back in November, on Reddit. It's a pretty interesting read: Belarus, the land of no applause ( http://www.worldaffairsjournal.org/article/belarus-land-no-a... )

I use TotalFinder as a finder replacement. It has a feature called "The Asepsis feature" which will redirect .DS_Store files to /usr/local/.dscache. Quite handy.

The interest rate is a measure of the leverage you can apply when buying that mortgage. Lower interest rates mean more leverage. Increased leverage increases risk. If they lower the interest rate, you can buy a more expensive home.. but you

Firstly, I was not saying businesses do not have to do marketing. All businesses have to (or should) do significant marketing/pr/advertising to reach their market. However, there's a massive difference between good marketing and deceptive/i

Patrick is falling into what, I call, the marketing trap. I like some of Patrick's advice, but I wouldn't follow this... ever. Patrick has a nice little niche business but that's all it is, a niche. Niches, by definition are really small, f

There are two schools of thought, in marketing, on giving away parts of your business, your ideas etc: Give away your non-core ideas to attract people/resources/interest and then sell your complete system. Give away your core ideas to "prov

The product and data in this case is your "core" that the article is advocating to keep close to your chest while outsourcing the non-essential components that would attract interested parties to your work.

If Github went in that direction, they would have to sell services to Enterprise clients to maintain/deploy the client's Github installation instead of selling the software itself.

One simple rule of business: commoditize your complements. Apple sells hardware and "gives away" all their media. Content creators and developers are charged only enough (30% margin) to basically break even managing the system. This adds tr

This lawsuit is likely not pertaining to cost but rather to control. Grooveshark is not really "piracy" since every content owner gets paid regardless of the origin of the content. Whether it cannibalizes other revenue sources is up for deb

The thing about your 300 songs is that they aren't 300 songs in your collection.. they are 300 songs added to the system. If anyone else streams or buys those songs, then the content owner will get paid. Meanwhile the ads or the $6 a month

I like Grooveshark's business model.. I think it's one of the most clever of all the new media companies. Media is a two way market. Both content owners and buyers must be completely satisfied for the market to work effectively. The two pro

You're confusing the big labels with a heavy marketing presence with the wide swath of medium sized labels that used to exist but no longer do. Now the situation is big labels pushing, mostly pre-internet era, artists with enough clout to p

Yeah there's lots of great UI libraries but it doesn't really solve the problem since they aren't universally applied. Users still have to learn the UI controls of each library or whatever else the designers come up with.
