The author has another blog post about learning to play the violin and how it taught him the importance of deliberate practice which I feel is probably what he is also trying to get across in this post. I am experiencing something similar a

I would much prefer a land value tax and relaxation of regulations preventing new construction (in London you can't build in certain areas/over a certain height because of Protected Views [1], which seems utterly bizarre, as if ma

I agree with your interpretation. With apologies to Helder Câmara - "When I tell the poor to save money on a latte they call me a saint, when I ask why the poor cannot afford a latte they call me a Communist."

Well, the best time was 30 years ago, the second best time is today. I mean it's not like we have much of an alternative although I agree with you on the scale of the challenge.

Energy consumption is tightly correlated with wealth and living standards. We should move to nuclear power and invest more in energy research like at ITER. The alternatives are population control or condemning swathes of the globe to povert

Homework is bad because for some kids it can be impossible - like what if you have to care for your younger siblings, or your home has no desk space or quiet place to work? To be honest extending the school day would probably make the most

Yeah, we could have had a sovereign wealth fund - instead we let the corporations exploit our natural resources for free. I guess the Empire finally colonised itself.

My main issue with academia was the relatively poor prospects (the pay isn't great) and the insecurity (there are far far less permanent positions/grants than the number that want them etc.) To be honest the pay isn't such a

Technically no for the standard frequentist confidence intervals, but if they use the Bayesian Credible Interval then I believe that would be the correct interpretation.

And yet here in BCN the market is crazy. The agency parasites are the worst - charging 10% of the annual rent just for giving you the keys and printing a copy of the contract. I was fortunate enough to be able to rent my flat from a family

I'm in Europe and inflation is like 1% here so maybe that is why it's always been really low? But a 10% raise is def. not a norm here - I've only gotten that when I was promoted and when I had a market correction raise (i.e.

That's very US centric. In the UK the A-levels we do at the end of high school cover first-year uni material and there are no general education requirements at university. The downside is we don't have the major system either - yo

In the UK we pay the costs too (although the loan system is more like an extra tax). I think the UK is actually more expensive than the USA in many cases as almost every uni is 9k GBP per year here vs. the USA where you have cheaper public

Start-ups want CS PhDs mostly. If your PhD is in Chemistry/Biology/Physics, not so much. Some fields of Physics do alright (primarily HEP due to the advanced mathematical/statistical analyses they learn).

Servants used to be common for the middle class too. Didn't Agatha Christie say something like: "I never thought I would be so poor as to not have staff, or so rich as to have an automobile."

It's like that quote attributed to Steinbeck - "Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires."
