Robotics still seems a long way off being able to automate many physical jobs - would you trust a robot to look after your aging parents without hurting them? Likewise jobs like computer programming seem pretty 'robot-proof'. It s

Isn't this quite similar to the scientific bases that exist on the Antarctic though? I mean I imagine any Mars colony could be incredibly selective about who to take.

I'd be really interested in hearing more about how you were able to do that transition to SWE. I work in Data Science so I have Python experience (at least for scripting) but the leap to SWE seems massive, let alone at some FAANG compa

The ozone hole and nuclear warfare/proliferation were fixed by new regulations based on the fear though. Perhaps if we'd never worried so much about the ozone hole, it'd be a lot bigger now. (it's still there by the way,

Has this actually been confirmed via observation though? Are there polls/surveys that see this effect? I mean I think if I was living right next to a dam or a chemical plant or whatever I would be more worried about an accident. Althou

It was interesting how they dealt with this for the Apollo missions. Shortly before the launches Operation Starfish Prime took place and one hope was that detonating nuclear bombs in the upper atmosphere might deform the Van Allen belts or

Catalunya isn't a little province either - in fact much of the issue is because it has a large amount of the GDP. I'm English but was living in Scotland at the time of the referendum there (I abstained) and having been living in B

Exactly, in my European city that delta he talks about would be negative. Plus since the crisis the banks will only lend with 20% deposit, plus 10% taxes - so you need a 30% downpayment. Given a flat will cost you around 180k euros you can

To be honest, I think a decent IDE does this as much as makes practical sense. Visual programming just seems awful - and yet a decent IDE can remove a lot of the pain points from the textual approach while keeping the advantages.

I did the Nand2Tetris course which includes building a basic compiler. It just helps fully understand how you go from words in a file to actually doing computations and how purely abstract ideas like a 'class' are implemented. To

It depends on the cost of living though. I earn around that in Western Europe but it's still a pretty good job for Spain and I have no doubt I live in better conditions than the Americans working for $15 an hour, which is really what m

What I hate about excel is if you now need to do a very similar task, again, it can involve a lot of messing about with the GUI. Versus changing a few parameters in the Python script.

I think the value is in checking assumptions - if the analytical approach assumes a normal distribution and then you do MCM and get a vastly different result then it is probably worth checking the assumptions made by the analytical model.

The problem is less one of regulation vs. not regulating and more the fact that most of the politicians are dinosaurs with little or no understanding of modern technology. They probably don't realise how unreasonable the demands are.

Perhaps. But in the 80's many thought that Japan would overtake the US so that dominated sci-fi and popular fiction. (see the cyberpunk tropes of Zaibatsus etc.) Didn't turn out that way though.
