It's easy to feel down when reading the news, but then something like this comes along and... the future's going to be so cool! :) I don't care if it even only works 20% of the time right now. The rest is elbow grease and faster hardware -

3-4 years ago MacBooks were already very popular among developers in the Valley, before the iPhone was a factor. Part of it is being fashionable, I'm sure, but part of it is the whole Unix thing without the headache of Linux, and part of i

The other predictors may not feel fair, but they're much more difficult to abuse or misuse than this scheme. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who uses this app should probably have their insurance raised much more than any individual drivers

It was an entertaining episode, but I can guarantee you can get that reaction in pretty much any country if you try hard enough (in many countries you'll likely end up in a far worse situation).

Personally, I find it refreshing to read a blog post that isn't - either directly or indirectly - about how amazing the author is. Programming blogging has a strong culture of focusing on the newest, shiniest, and cleverest; the only negati

That can be debated, but from the perspective of the decision makers at Visa, Mastercard, and Paypal - who would presumably be the ones saying "we don't negotiate with terrorists" - the terrorist is obviously Anonymous.

I agree that definitions are important, but most people's definitions of terrorism involve something going boom. I'm not as interested in coming up with my own definition as I am in using the terms and definitions that are least likely to

I never thought I'd be having this discussion on HN, but by that definition Fox News (and to a lesser extent other networks and/or "commentators") would qualify as a terrorist organization. As much as I dislike Fox News, actually extending

I am surprised you stuck around, to be honest. I'm not sure I would have, and I'm sure many don't. Could be argued that's the point, but it doesn't feel quite right.

I found that matches my experience fairly well. I haven't found Apple's documentation to be significantly worse than Android. Parts of the documentation are sparse at best (the Cocoa layer is great, lower-level stuff less so), but overall

I'm satisfied that we at least understand each other's points - it's gratifying to have an Internet discussion where the two parties aren't simply talking past each other. I am not arguing that option 3 will magically solve everything - it'

Daniel, I respect your opinions, and I certainly respect the strength of your conviction about WikiLeaks. Most people seem to be taking a white-or-black stance on this, but I'm stuck somewhere in the gray. Regarding the leaked cables (at l

There's a difference between creating and putting out fires, though. I enjoy creating, but I can also set it aside long enough to spend some time with someone. I DON'T enjoy putting out fires, but it is usually a necessary evil towards a

But that's exactly the point of patents. If there's evil here, it's because of using offensively a patent that should not have been granted, not because other platforms are also involved.
