This is what I mean by hysteria. Actual odds of a child being molested by a male teacher/caregiver? Female teacher/caregiver? Family member or family friend of either gender? Regardless of numbers or justification, you're also accepting a

Two immediate thoughts: 1) Any similar argument about women and another profession would instantly be met with cries of sexism. 2) This is a great example of the types of unsubstantiated mass hysteria that seem to be more and more common.

Facebook games (and MMOs in general, for the most part) are designed tightly around a feedback loop meant to make the game as addictive as possible. It strongly reminds me of experiments where rats are given a choice between eating and rec

Out of curiosity, can you link to one of those good resources, and to an equivalent w3schools page? Setting aside questions of Google rank and discoverability, I suspect the "good resource" will have much more information, will be more corr

I think you might have missed my point. ExpertsExchange was useful because it had a broad range of obscure technical information, and the ability to get specific questions answered, but it was spammy and a pain to use. StackOverflow came a

While everyone else was busy bitching about ExpertsExchange, a few people got together, built a much better alternative, and now dominate Google search results. As far as I can tell, these guys are dismissing that option because it's too mu

I doubt it's about downvotes. I think people want to be supportive, on the basis that making something mediocre is better than not making anything at all. I think the number of comments and upvotes is a good enough indicator - as you said,

The comparison to Digg feels forced and unnecessary, especially without numbers for Digg in January and December. Reddit had 250 million pageviews in January, Digg had 200 million in July (before the redesign - this likely means Reddit was

That's not the point of the article, I think. It's not that FB is unfair because it's a better investment opportunity. It's that by going outside the usual framework, such deals have an advantage - by virtue of less overhead due to regula

Fascinating read. Does anyone have any examples or explanations for how these CPU bugs are caused? I probably have enough knowledge of CPU architecture from school to follow an explanation, but not enough to make my own guess.

I agree, but there's a big difference between honest, polite feedback and negativity, meanness, or just good old-fashioned flaming. HN is pretty good in this respect. Reddit is still decent, though it can definitely lean towards mean. You
