Yes, I was thinking to this when I've read the OP. I have source code I wrote in the 90's that was displaying text boxes with the border on the actual border of the characters, without any color bleeding. But I was just using the

I would say this is not completely true. I spend a lot of time using CLI applications, but I _do_ care about how the terminal contents look!

JBIG2 is not specific to fax machines... Adobe Acrobat proposes CCITT group 4 (which is probably the most widely supported compression type on fax machines, by the way), and two flavours of JBIG2, when compressing scanned monochrome documen

But AFAIK you can't do non-square QR codes. Plus, at small sizes, you lose a lot of space for the alignment marks.

Swiss post has a similar thing, you can buy a stamp (on the form of a 9-letter code) via SMS. Never used but seems it works. No barcodes for regular stamps for now, but datamatrix barcodes are used since more than 15 years for bulk mail and

As far as I understand it, Firefox is not reading QR codes out of images and automatically opening links, but rather reloading already opened URLs that were coming from QR codes. Maybe not ideal, but far better than having the OS scan for Q

Telephones and asynchronous communication have very different use cases. There are many situations where asynchronous is much better, but when some complexity comes in and would require lots of exchanges, a phone call is much more effective

SMS text messages could be intercepted (ab)using SS7, which is the protocol interconnecting the various phone carriers. You "just" need to get access to the SS7 network... hard but by no means impossible.

Given the detection code is in a separated library, it should be relatively easy (supposing the code is not obfuscated) to find out where it is loaded/called.
