Some companies have very horizontal structure, there isn't much of a corporate ladder to climb. E.g., in trading firms a Quant is often just a Quant even after 10 years in the company. This doesn't mean at all, though, that the pa

Been using ST2 for many years, then ST3 till last year. Tried out Atom but it was slow and sluggish. Out of sheer curiosity, learned myself some vi from scratch and switched to Spacemacs, haven't looked back since :)

Taking musicianship seriously. I started playing piano and taking classes when I was 15 but didn't pay enough attention to it. 15 years later, I'm angry at my past self at being so lazy and wasting time on things that are now utte

It's funny because I do work at SIG (Dublin, Ireland), and we do know a few folks from Continuum personally. For a quant role, even if in the end it is likely to involve a lot of hardcore low level coding, you're (generally) expec

I do all of the stuff you mentioned on a daily basis (quant in a high-frequency trading firm) -- NumPy (plus its C API), Cython, numba, a good measure of C++, and even some occasional LLVM. The typical projects range from ingesting market d

HDF5 benchmark looks bogus, it's not clear what exactly the author meant by it and how the data was stored/retrieved. With proper filters set up, it should beat any csv reader by both (uncompressed) throughput and runtime

I agree with the author, and I think the idea is somewhat applicable to everyday tools like text editors. This is partially why I've switched to Emacs (Spacemacs/evil) after using "conventional" text editors like Sublime

The only benefit as I see it is it being very lightweight + providing tighter interop with C++ classes and C++11 shenanigans. For me personally, there're real reasons not to use it -- e.g., no support for structured/record arrays:

One thing that is not immediately obvious about vim (or evil Emacs) is the gamification part. Before I switched to Spacemacs myself, I used to think -- why do those vim guys torture themselves using an old deprecated tool. Now I actually fi

I switched to Emacs (Spacemacs) from Sublime Text with zero prior knowledge of vim or Emacs. In a day or two I could continue doing what I was normally doing. In a few weeks I felt completely comfortable.

This was the case for me as well, until I got myself a split ergo keyboard. With conventional keyboards, you have to twist your wrists for your fingers to stay on the home row (even more so if you have big hands).
