Will streaming services ever stop over-compressing their content? I have a top-of-the-line 4K TV and gigabit internet, yet the compression artifacts make everything look like putty. Honestly, the best picture quality I’ve ever seen was over

I thought Cloudflare was 100% Rust, and x86 (EPYC) these days. Interesting to hear Go & ARM in use.

Lots of dupes lately. I've personally commented on lots of dupes lately. Makes me wonder if HN dupe detector is broken/changed recently.

I’m a big fan of NPR and the quality of their journalism. But it’s always struck me as odd that their frequent pledge drives suggest the ads they run don’t actually cover their costs. In effect, each 30-second pledge driver must generate mo

It’s a Catch-22. If you don’t memorize numbers and call your family from your usual phone (via saved contacts), they’ll answer because they recognize the number. But if your phone breaks and you have to call from another phone, memorizing t

I was hoping this was going to be about eliminating the heat trail of a plane. Then learned it’s just about rerouting a flight to climate zones that will less likely form a vapor trail.

Some refer to it as "circular financing". It's "seller financing" but to a degree we've never seen before in an industry (which create these "circular" effects). There's a good HN thread from 2-d

Naive question, but does this site actually require much ongoing maintenance? I’ve used it for years and find it incredibly useful (& am appreciative of its existence) - just didn’t realize it needed much upkeep.

Texas still has its own struggles. "Tent cities" do still exist, regardless of what the article stated. And under bridges is still a common gathering point. But yes, to a way lesser degree than anything you'd find in CA.

Am I the only one who struggles to even find where to use Googles AI offerings. It took me way too long to figure out how to even access & use Veo 3. It’s like Google doesn’t know how to package a product.
