AirCover just sounds like a rebrand of their existing policy. They've always offered an "swap for similar or refund" policy when hosts cancel.

There are lots of people who advance agendas (whether in the office or in the government) that they think are best for their careers. Whether they believe the agenda is right or wrong is secondary.

The argument is that this exists on a spectrum. The best way to get the artists true intention is to watch a film in a well-calibrated theater. Then a high-quality Blu-ray. Web streaming involves even more compromise. We tolerate Netflix re

> you only become 'slower' due to avoiding challenges This is exactly what the study disproves. It breaks out "slowness" into the multiple components. Caution is one of these.

Can you say where you were seeing those prices? That's wildly different from what I see in my metro area. At my local McDonalds a Big Mac meal is $6, not $11.

You use far more than that. The vast majority of water you “consume” is in the production of the food you eat, especially meat.

It's nice to hear not all contests will be limited to 1000 words. Some of the most well-known sci-fi short stories are much longer than that. The Last Question clocks in at 4442 words.

Why not let athletes use steroids? It's unsafe. And people might consider risking their health if they feel it could make/break their career. Better to have a strong stigma against self-experimentation to avoid that.

Why oppose it at all? Why get so hung up on the term? If anything, "accelerated learning" seems like a better term for these programs than "gifted and talented". Gifted and talented are non-specific and poorly-defined te

> The only reason this person was able to get this lease is that this area is uneconomic to produce from. This is an important point. This much acreage would have cost $28 million in the Permian Basin.

That seems pretty cheap. That would mean designing the SAT would cost $0.6 million. Compare that to the $640,000 million we spend per year and it seems absolutely negligible.

Indeed. There are several ice houses remaining in Houston where you can find cold beer and a casual crowd. My favorite, West Alabama Ice House, opened in 1928, a couple decades before air conditioning became common.

Murder rate is arguably the most useful crime metric because it's the hardest one for politicians/police to game. Changes in enforcement can change trends for assaults and property crime, but you can't really hide bodies.

I also think in terms of effort vs. reward, swimming is a tremendously worthwhile skill to learn. You can become reasonably competent at swimming in 40 hours. Compare that to learning a language, which can take 1000s of hours.

In many communities (HN, Reddit, etc.) downvotes are ostensibly not to be used for disagreement. Forcing users to supply a reason could introduce enough friction to encourage more thoughtful usage of the downvote.

The determination of whether to buy the house is based on the calculated rate of return. So even if you make a profit, if the time horizon is large you’d be better off investing that money in stocks. The UI doesn’t make that clear enough.

Buying a house can have an advantage over stocks in the leverage you get with a mortgage, and in certain cases tax incentives. Whether that’s enough to compensate for the better returns of stocks is the hundred thousand dollar question.

Would it make more sense to invert it and plot cumulative cost? Rate of return in the results is basically the opportunity cost of your increased spend on the house. That can be compared to other possible investments.
