Clear and specific requirements for environments you need. Good tests, with good code coverage. Work with us when we suggest to you that we deploy to a non-production environment first. Work with us to automate as much as we possibly can.

RealVNC. They're the ones that invented the protocol in the first place. The team started out at AT&T then left to form their own company.

Someone who speaks LOTS of value, often. You would do very well to read his blog posts (kalzumeus.com) and follow his comments here on HN. He wants others to be successful in their efforts, and gives lots of good info on how to do just that

For me, about a year. I'm doing cloud design & deployment. Nervous because I know these contracts will not last forever. That, and I am the business. If something happens to me, I go from good money to $0 in no time flat. I got t

As another solopreneur, who is doing a fraction of what you are doing... I would love to talk to you about how to get to something even close to the position that you're in now. I want to grow my business, and be even a fraction of t

I second the self-hosting. I have a pretty beefy Dell PowerEdge that I use for work (self-employed) that is a vSphere host. If I need something external, then Digital Ocean.

When I think of companies "doing it right", I think of the ones who choose to stay private and retain control. Slow but methodical growth. Basecamp. Dyson. Cargill. Patagonia. (to name a few)

I understand that publicly traded companies are one cornerstone of our economy. That said, it's depressing to see companies get bought and sold just to move money around, and the people that work in those jobs completely ignored, or ju

Oregon is one of the most expensive states to live in, as well. (If you opt for Portland.) It doesn't compare to California, but it's getting there.

Industrialization didn't end up with a net loss of jobs. It ended up with a change and retooling of jobs. This hasn't changed with the advance of technology. We just have to figure out the how, and where, and what of this chan

If the taxi cab companies can't make it on their own, they should go out of business. As a self-employed person, I shouldn't expect someone else to bail me out by their efforts. If I can't make it on my own steam, I close up

The legal worries about putting stuff in the cloud are much more apparent with companies outside of the US, in my experience. Was formerly part of a US company that was pushing a new product hard towards a cloud-based model. They were exp
