As always, it depends on what you are needing. Do you only need console? Then SSH and tmux work great. Do you need to take control over the other person's desktop? Transfer files? In this case, there are lots of options. VNC, GoToAssis

I had such a poor experience with the 2016 MBP that I switched to a Dell XPS 9560 running Windows 10 & WSL. The XPS units are quite nice.

Just wait. The 16/17 models are awful. See the post on the front page of HN right now, about the keyboard repair program. Mine has been in THREE TIMES for sound and keyboard issues. Worst Apple buy ever. YMMV.

OH. Is there a Repair Program for High Sierra too? Repairing the keyboard only goes so far if the OS still sucks as bad as it does. </s> #sorta I really hope Apple gets back to reliable and "Just Works" again.

In the meantime, find projects on GitHub that are written in languages you know and fix bugs. That may help give you cred, where you have a dearth of it, otherwise.

Fix bugs. If you have the grasp enough to fix bugs, it shows a good understanding of development. Not to say that's all there is, but that is one thing that'd move you out of the novice phase in my opinion.

A couple questions. Is there any way to change the font size in the Web IDE? Is there a dark mode? Thank you for this!

1000x this. They do not care about anything other than to extract the maximum amount of profit from your labor. You take care of you. They won't. Do what you've got to do, but tell them as little as you possibly can.

Reading this thread... I'm glad I didn't have this noise around when I was first learning to program. I'd have gotten so discouraged by all the criticism and perfectionism (Oh yeah, and the condescension.) that I figure I

One issue I see is that it seems like any mention of seeking the help of a counselor/psychologist/psychiatrist is SOOOOOO stigmatized that folks are repelled by the idea. It's very counterproductive and stops many from doin

Ummm... YES. Lots of folks who have been unsatisfied with the current Mac lineup, and High Sierra, have switched. I did. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If you need a UNIX-y workflow the Windows Subsystem for Linux makes all the difference.

They're doing a hell of a lot more cool things than Apple, these days. Windows is moving. macOS is terrible. (Says the guy who's been a Mac user for >15 years and bought every new product Apple has come out with.) Apple is doin

For some perspective... I don't have a CS degree. I was a Business Major. I am now self-employed and going through common self-employment struggles. I'd venture a guess and say that you probably know more than I do about tech and

Why, oh why, are you starting out so defeated?! I'm not sure the origin of the quote... "If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right." You're shooting yourself in the foot before you even start!!

I do Chef and Ansible development. I'd love to know how to sell and find more good customers. I have a long-term customer who's had me on what amounts to a staff augmentation project for 3 years. I know it won't last forever.

I'd say you might want to look at it a little differently. Look at it in terms of value, as well. Customers value widget X differently. One may think your widget is too expensive, and they'll go elsewhere and race to the bottom. A

As someone who has been working from home for the last 4 years, I couldn't disagree with you more. More real work, far fewer distractions, 5 second commute vs. 45-60 minutes each way. That's just for starters.

I'm guessing my opinion isn't going to be popular, but you can train your children not to bother you. This requires participation from your spouse/partner. I've worked from home for four years now. We have a 6-year-old.
