Price comparison sites used to be very popular. But product search is extremely hard to do well. Users want to compare products on their merits, not based on how much the seller is bidding on PPC. And not just product features but also s

It's also a thread about memory allocation in Webkit tho.

Now if only I could limit the amount of memory a browser would consume! The fact that desktop browsers grind a 16GB machine to a halt, while on mobile devices having 1000s of tabs is a non-issue is plain wrong. Since I can't limit

Alternative take: all protocols die a slow death, being replaced by centralised services. XMPP was replaced by WhatsApp. SMTP is being replaced by Gmail. HTTP will probably get replaced by some binary Chrome protocol, etc. At some point n

Well done for putting it out there! We've worked on this about 3 years ago, plus background removal (realtime alpha-matting still not really done well by anyone), portrait re-lighting (G-Meet is now doing this) and even eye-contact (ad

Let's say you have a hobby or open source website that requires a database backend and isn't making money. $300 / year is quite expensive all of a sudden.

Not trolling, I genuinely think it's a lot of money for a simple database though. Maybe yours isn't, but I don't know any provider that charges less than 300 for a hosted db. Btw Sqlite can go a long way: https://

Paying $300 per year for something that a raspberry pi + sqlite could handle is still very expensive imo.

I've never owned a better phone than the Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G because it's substantially thinner and lighter than any other phone of that size. A smaller screen size may be nice but I've realised how much more I really care

It's not about price increases, it's about the increase in profit margins. Oil prices can go up and down due to supply constraints but profit margins can remain constant.

BP and Shell are vertically integrated and mostly definitely do own a large number of gas stations at least here in Europe. However the owner doesn't really matter in this hypothetical example as long as BP and Shell actually control t

Tax payers are paying for this war in the form of higher energy bills. The oil cartel and major shareholders (Vanguard, BlackRock, Chase etc) are getting the rewards.

I don't buy this argument. Assume the oil has already been dug up and refined. Two gas stations next to each other: Shell & BP should compete on price to the point that minimum profit margins are established. This doesn't

In PoS systems validators can vote for both chains in case of a fork, as there is nothing at stake. It's not about honesty. It's about resources being committed.

Indeed. I fail to see how validators in PoS systems are any different to eg shareholders of Visa.

I use Gmail with my own domain for free. My domain registrar (namecheap) allows forwarding of email for free. You can add extra email addresses in Gmail itself.

I think the answer depends on the use case. Spreadsheets are for general purpose compute. They are glorified calculators, and aren't meant to replace databases, even though some people seem to use them to store lists of records. Datab

The benefit of this approach is that it's an addition to PageRank, not a replacement. You don't need massive adoption of the social part I think cause you can link to eg HN, which already links to other sites. It's simply e

The only viable alternative to PageRank I know of is social search: show me results that my friends (and friends of friends and so on) liked/bookmarked. Delicious sort of tried it but never executed well on the search side. In a way it

What we need instead is a DATA-oriented web. The web already largely consists of interlinked databases (anything from Amazon to AirBnB is really just a database exploration tool). Even WordPress blogs are really just databases (with TEXT

Stock exchanges have a central limit order book. Crypto exchanges are like foreign exchange brokers at airports: they act as market makers, earning the majority of their fees from the bid/ask spread rather than some fixed comms afaik.
