Character is a theme (and title!) of many of his writings. Ending an avowed life-time commitment in the circumstances around the way he did it brings that into question. We should all be questioning it, even if we're free to come to di

It only works that way up to a point. That point is when the private stuff is either illegal or is directly relevant to the work, as in this case. #metoo anyone?

Well, no, I will admit you can probably still get quite a lot out of it. I mean, I believe he's trying to do good work, but I put him in the same category as Thomas Friedman and Charlie Rose. That is, extraordinary media people with gr

Agreed. Not only is his writing just a bunch of loose thoughts imagined into very Brooks-centric concept, this is also the guy who left his wife of 20 years for a woman 25 years his junior. How do they spend their time? He pimps work like &

Yes! I always thought the unaided or alarm clock only wake up is a tall order and doesn't quite jive with how I sleep/wake. A proper physical wake up is just the thing.

It would be interesting to hear more people’s experiences with that. It resonates with me already; so many things I cared about no longer matter. It’s not exactly bad, but a little unsettling. Will I eventually care about nothing?

The people with families seemed settled with their lot (which isn't to say they were without regrets), while the ones without families were sort of still searching for something. To me it just underscored the importance of focusing on

Not advice, but for my 40th I visited nearly every important friend I've had. Several I'd basically lost touch with. I asked them deep questions about their lives and hopes and perspectives. It was quite a journey, and was hearten

Similar story here. Getting older has helped a lot and suddenly I'm way more open to different genres and they land with me. Being educated about those genres also helps me get into them. Poetry, classical music, jazz, hip hop, absract

Users pick full-featured, easy-to-use proprietary software over narrow-use OSS software with awkward UX all day. Stein had a grand vision to make the many OSS math tools actually preferable. I was in the room for a couple early Sage hackath

It can be nice to have more time with babies and the other stages (they do grow quickly, you know) and it's also fun for siblings to have each other. Considering people ignore financial realities in all kinds of spectacular ways, endin

I moved on to an HP Spectre and Windows 10 from my 2009 MBP...I'm mostly happy with it, but VERY SAD that the MBP era seems to have ended rather than getting better and better. It's a damn shame.

Perhaps there's a need for an archive or registry of original video so that we can see all known footage of an historical figure. I'd like to have some way to combat the coming memes of John Wayne advocating for arming teachers an

Thought limited, my experience in Toys 'R' Us was that it was no more fun and exciting then the toy aisles at Target. So how was a dedicated toy store going to win that way? Compare that to shopping for home improvement; way more

Hate it. It's just an indication that we don't know how to talk about education. How is STEAM not basically just "education" itself? As someone pointed out, only the humanities are missing, so surely it will soon be SHTE

I think of Mister Rogers as a towering moral authority; he is basically my Jesus. That said, the entirety of his goodness is boiled down to his simple commitment to taking others exactly as they are. It seems simple, but it's magic.
