OP was me annoyingly quoting myself, and here's my refutation annoyingly quoting OP: "Software libraries suck. Here's why, in a sentence: they promise to be abstractions, but they end up becoming services. An abstraction free

Awesome! I was thinking more about the user-facing apps you use. Scanning https://github.com/khuedoan/homelab , Gitea is Go, Grafana is Javascript (approximately), Element is Javascript, Dendrite is Go, Vault is Go. K8s

What languages does it depend on so far? Do you try to minimize the number of language eco-systems you rely on?

I still believe :) I'm looking not for an economic argument but for a strategic one. I think[1] a self-hosted setup with minimal dependencies can be more resilient than a conventional one, whether with a vendor or self-hosted. https

For sure no worse than the alternatives. I also don't care about downtime. But I'm looking for something that minimizes the overheads over not self-hosting . I'd love to prove Moxie Marlinspike wrong that "people don&#x

Yeah, that's totally fine. I ask in case someone has thought about it, so I can learn from them. Doing just the fun parts of self-hosting will not get you to infrastructure .

The question I have whenever I see something like this is what the upgrade process looks like. How much time do you spend per month upgrading dependencies, how many mailing lists you're subscribed to, etc. When the log4j thing blew up,

No opinion on what anyone should do here. It's pretty clear it's a challenging situation. More generally, the way I feel about Hyrum's Law is: * The only way to guarantee you won't run afoul of Hyrum's Law is to mak

Two obvious constraints in sharing software: * If software producers are pushing out obviously incompatible changes (excluding Hyrum's law and https://xkcd.com/1172 ) to consumers, the eco-system is broken. This include

Ha, anybody who thinks memorization is a Western thing hasn't experienced Indian schools. Isn't Flat Earthism an American phenomenon? If so, the school system wouldn't explain why Europe doesn't have it.

I'm very interested in the network stack, having explored it for a while for https://github.com/akkartik/mu before giving up. What sort of network card do you support?

There are options between those opposites, though. Here's my preferred point[1] in the space of possibilities: It's impossible for all people to effectively use software over the long term without learning about its internals. S

Yeah, I noticed the lack of quantitative data as well. The biggest qualitative red flag for me in the whole article is sending victims back to live with the abuser very soon after the abuser has been found guilty and served a penalty. Reaso

I don't understand why you consider the iPad to not be a general-purpose computer. Do you mean an iPad without a web browser? Is iOS really good at keeping ancient apps working on ancient devices?
