Someone born in 1885 who lived to be 70 was brought into a world where it took weeks to get from the US to Europe, and died in a world where it took hours. TNT was the hottest in explosives at their birth, and we’d seen the spread of city e

It’s funny you’re using “blue collar” to mean low skilled probably things like retail cashiers, but folks in trades actually make very livable wages in the US. Here’s a recent article from the seattle times: https://www.seattleti

I suspect the concern OP was referring to was not that bots aren’t challenging, but to the sense they play differently than players do. There is overlap in what it means to be good vs players and bots, but there are also elements unique to

It’s certainly unintuitive, but surely it isn’t necessary for video game mechanics to map directly onto real world actions to be interesting.

FWIW the behavior of delete on a pointer that isn’t either null or returned from new is undefined. So a conforming C++ compiler doesn’t have to diagnose this mistake, and similarly the compiled program doesn’t have to do anything meaningful

What’s the actual cost for chargebacks here? Presumably they are quite capable of revoking licenses to the purchased item. This is slightly hairier for in app purchases laundered through a game currency run by a third party, but still seems

Here’s an excerpt from Michael Pollan’s book How to Change Your Mind. The psychologist here is a woman approximately his age (early 60s at the time) who he describes as a prominent psychologist: >Specifically, the psychologist felt that

Surely the most challenging thing with encountering strange code is the “why” not the “what”. Am I alone in this?

Sure. To be clear I’m not saying I think they are the same thing. I don’t have the language to explain the difference in a manner I find sufficiently precise. I was hoping others might.

Would love to use duolingo, but they have no interest in supporting iranian languages. I’ve never really seen a clear answer for why. They have about 200 million native speakers worldwide. Persian, Pashto, Kurdish are the largest.

Can you explain how “pattern matching” differs from “reasoning”? In mechanical terms without appeals to divinity of humans (that’s both valid, and doesn’t clarify). Keep in mind GPT 4 is multimodal and not just matching text.

Is there a technology for wireless communication that exists that has a small enough delay to make this happen? Certainly it’s a problem well under speed of light constraints, but VR apps need to be running at least 90 hz to avoid making us

At the risk of being accused of missing your point: you owe it to yourself to try a nice built in bidet. Many people who try it don’t want to go back to paper alone. Or not. Your call.

“It’s just auto complete” is probably one of the worst takes out there on AI. It’s also clear the author doesn’t actually know how LLMs work and is parroting information, e.g. “…it tries to get you to finish your sentence with the statistic

You would have a capital loss to carry forward, and this is part of why the current rules aren’t great for people who aren’t already wealthy. If the tax bill is a big chunk of your net worth it makes it hard to take advantage of what might

In this context companies aren’t a pinky swear “I promise this has value”. A 10x valuation increase for a private company happens for a reason: for VC funded start ups that is often because they did an up round. Someone else put a lot more
