Did you know that one third of US carbon emissions come from buildings? Upgrading buildings would massively reduce emissions, and we’d never have to generate the electricity in the first place. It pays for itself.

There’s an elegant solution to all this: better energy efficiency for buildings. It’s funny seeing people in this thread jumping right past the root cause and suggesting elaborate solutions like nuclear power. And before you say it’s not f

I’ve enjoyed many of pg’s essays, but this is my favourite of all time. I often feel burned out and uninspired these days, even after past successes. It’s wonderful to take a look back at a time when overly ambitious ideas would be naively

It seems to be part of the New York Times style guidelines to put everything into context of presidential politics. For example, they published an article yesterday about the technical merits of hypersonic missiles, but instead of focusing

Why do you think it is specifically relevant to say “He did not tell people to commit their crimes”? Do you imagine some “correct” process exists for this situation, where Trump would face a trial and conviction for inciting the riot, and t

You certainly can label it as misogyny if you wish to, and you’re not wrong, but ultimately it’s little more than a pejorative. Outside the confines of a Foucauldian academic discussion, these words are used to define and exclude people, n

Why ask me? I don’t claim to know what they’re thinking, I’m just skeptical at the idea that misogynists are so evenly distributed between genders. Why don’t you actually go talk to pro-life people and really listen to what they have to sa

Services make up 80% of US GDP, so it is definitely being measured to a large degree. I think you have a valid point to make about GDP being a poor measure of certain things, but I think you would find it worthwhile to study more about what

This article is not really worthy of Hacker News. We already have a tax system that is designed to do a fair amount of wealth redistribution. That moral argument was fought and largely won a long time ago. Now, that system certainly needs
