A similar behavior happens in the game ROM dumping community, owners of very rare or sometimes unique arcade boards often refuse to release ROM dumps, or do so only in a small group of individuals. They would lose nothing if they released i

I don't know why you're being downvoted. Libraries scanning old books and applying a new copyright on them (which shouldn't be possible, scans are not a creative act) is a common issue.

I'd have thought the opposite : run the CPU at full power so you can terminate short tasks quickly and go back to sleep. Then if the task takes longer, throttle down as needed to regulate heat dissipation. Since there are a lot of smal

This is pretty cool, since there is no word size you can chose to compute numbers of any size you want when you write the program. It's pretty fitting for a calculator application.

I'm pretty sure I've been having the same few (dozen or so) pictures in a loop. Maybe the differences are too subtle to notice to the non-professional eye. Also I feel the resolution is a bit too low to really tell, the scars are

Some computer magazines of the 80's actually included so called "Floppy ROMs", actually thin vinyl records, in the magazine pages ! : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interface_Age

That's not how it works, Amdahl's law is about the execution speedup you get by splitting a task across multiple cores, it is not about how many tasks you can run simultaneously on those cores, usually when we're talking ab

Very interesting. I'm wondering if this has implications in physics ? Since "the book of nature is written in mathematical language", does this mean that attempts to find a unified theory of everything are doomed ? I'm t

A cult classic. This whole thing looks like something out of a cartoon. I especially love the shot of the cart with boxes of dynamite haphazardly thrown together and someone's leg resting on top of it.

The SB card uses a number of old sound ICs that are simply not manufactured any more, and can't be bought from Mouser. Chinese shops are now the only source for these, and in my experience buying a few, they do work. No idea where they

Interesting idea. I wonder how much height difference you would need so that gravity gives you enough energy to power the regenerator at the bottom? The actual energy would come from ... the gravity field of the Earth?

Not really, neurons are one of the few types of cells that don't undergo a cycle of death/creation of new cells. The neurons you had when you were born are the same you have now. They probably encode a lot of information that woul

You don't need to recreate a full planet-sized magnetic field for that, you can more feasibly put a much smaller dipole at the L1 Lagrange point that will deflect the solar wind sufficiently so that it avoids Mars.

Yes. I suspect a large part of why so many shows fail according to Netflix is that people have already been bitten once or more by cancelled shows and they'll now wait for a few seasons to see if the show is rolling before watching. It
