There are emulators (for other targets) which do emulate NTSC decoding properly, but until I did the research for this demo nobody understood how the CGA card generates composite signals well enough to be emulate it properly. I have some co

The emulator I was mostly using for development (DOSBox) doesn't actually crash itself, but here's a nice example of how it goes wrong. In the final part of 8088MPH there is an instruction that modifies the instruction after it, b

It depends on how much conventional RAM you have after DOS is loaded, but if you're only missing the last few kB it should be fine (we targeted 640kB but it tops out at about 507kB).

It certainly can be (and has been) used for games where a limited set of sprites are drawn - each frame of animation is just a separate compiled sprite routine. Compiled sprite routines write at video memory addresses relative to a specifie

Actually reload has been replaced by LRA for x86/x86_64 in GCC 4.8 and work is ongoing to bring LRA to other targets. So it shouldn't be forever.

Wow, so Google penalizes a site if a link to that site shows up in spammy pages? That seems like a new business model for black-hat SEOers: "hey, nice site you have there - it'd be a shame if links to it started appearing all over my spammy

As well as the problems mentioned in other comments, this idea suffers from a massive "analog hole" just as with audio. If you can print an object, it would be extremely easy to sample the pulses sent to the stepper motors and run a "virtua

That was my first thought too, and I made up serial and parallel cables. But without a keyboard or disk drives, there's no way to bootstrap it into running some software that will talk to the serial or parallel port.

These machines are so old they don't even have a real time clock, let alone any CMOS RAM on the motherboard. You change the BIOS settings by flipping physical switches, and DOS would prompt you to set the time and date on every boot! This p

Heh, I used to do that with all the binaries I could find in an attempt to learn their secrets (before I discovered I could do it with DEBUG.COM). I found that doing "copy command.com /b con" would show me more since it would stop on EOF ch

A little update - I've now replaced the power supply's circuit board with one from a modern (and working) ATX PSU, the graphics card with a CGA card (which works with the TV with the BIOS timings) and booted into ROM BASIC using a little Wi
