Here in San Francisco, some of the "old money" people control a large chunk of the medallions. The whole process is very opaque. Drivers usually rent the taxis from these owners; typically, it's $100 for an 8-hour shift, double that for wee

You are forgetting Eagle Claw, and the fiasco at Desert One. Look, neither of us can prove our claims, since we weren't there. But I have read several news reports along these lines, that Obama pushed for more redundancy. One might ask: why

There were a total of 4 helicopters (including the Chinook), from what I've read. Two went in, while two others hovered nearby. Apparently, Obama himself asked them to have a backup plan: http://swampland.time.com/2011/05/03/obama-pushed-f

I'm not sure your location is the correct one. In the ground photos, you can see high-tension wires running near the compound; your don't appear to have any. And the compound is in the middle of a residential area (there's video from @Reall

Excellent writeup. I agree, the last 2-3 years seem to have been real James-Bondian stuff in Pakistan. Just to add to your comment: allowing the Kunduz Airlift (shortly after the invasion in 2001) was another of Bush administration's big mi

You must be a mind-reader to know what GWB was thinking of when he made that comment? (This is not an ad-hominem attack). All we have to go by is GWB's actions and words. The actions at Tora Bora alone are a strong datapoint; but over the y

At a tactical level, you are correct: the credit goes to the US military. But you have to give credit to Obama too. Bush had his eyes focused on Iraq, and let BinLaden escape a few times. I still vividly remember, at some press conference a

Meh, too much back-and-forth for me to jump in. There may be a perfectly good reason for Google to exclude contractors from the "Googly perks": the Microsoft lawsuit. If Google treats the contractors just like its employees, then the contra

I think most smokers start at a young age; if you're not a smoker by age 25, there is little chance of you becoming one after that. This is why a lot of cigarette advertising is subliminally targeted at young folks.

Here's how I see it: Manning gets thrown in torture chamber, and Obama doesn't give a shit. Despite the outcry from top sources[1] , he doesn't care. Then he announces his candidacy, and as he finally starts talking to his core supporters (

I'm sorry, but you're giving AI too much credit. There was only 1 reason why Bradley Manning was moved: 2012 election. Obama knows that as long as Manning was being tortured, this would be a sore sticking point with his core Democrat suppor

Assuming that the people managing this challenge are the same ones as those that did the previous Hearst Challenge, I'll stay far away from it. They don't think through the rules, and change them on the fly. Last time, at one stage, the lea

I think the word "job" comes from the old mainframe days. Each program was encapsulated in a "job". There was even a language on some systems (aptly named "Job Control Language", or JCL) to specify the different aspects of the job.

blogs.law.harvard.edu also belongs to harvard.edu, so what's the problem? Many universities give blog space (and email accounts) to alumni, as a way to keep them engaged (and hit them up for donations...).

You know, these "asset forfeiture" laws will never change as long as it's the 'little people' who are getting reamed. The day the government grabs the assets of a few rich people, you can bet your ass these laws will change in a hurry.
