I don't understand where the hate is coming from. What are people disputing here? That the picture was found on Flickr? That the scientists didn't really see the picture? What is it, exactly, that's getting in your craw? It's a trivial litt

It's NPR, not your mom-and-pop radio station. I'm sure they verify the story before publishing it.

Yeah, this sentence: "The new species was dubbed Semachrysa jade — not after its pale green color, but after Winterton's daughter." just bothered me. A total dick move by Winterton.

Will the PBS stations broadcast this event live? Or will I have to depend on the Internet gods and stream from ustream.tv?

I'd like to see how it works on the third image from the top, with the gas station sign, etc. It is fairly straightforward to detect a billboard in a random nature scene; look for straight lines and intersections of them. Most (all?) billbo

I have 6 accounts, and use just 1, and that too once every 2-3 months. I'm guessing the active accounts follow a Zipfian distribution; and probably the most active ones are bots and corporate accounts (managed by teams of people).

Studies have shown that fiber to a house results in a net increase of about $10K in the house's value. Since typical property taxes are about 1% of the value, any local government that does this is looking at about $100/year extra income pe

Aerogel (aka "solid smoke") was the lightest so far, at 1mg/cc[1] . The density of air is 1.2 mg/cc. FTA: "The substance weighs just 0.2 milligrams per cubic centimeter" So why doesn't this thing just fly away, if its density is 0.2 mg/cc ?

I'm not an Oracle hater (I just dislike them a little). But if this is true, then they have an economic incentive to _not_ issue free fixes in a timely manner. Or, (not to sound to tinfoil-hattish) to release _slightly_ broken things that d

I like the first one. Think anonymous dropboxes. You don't need much storage; hopefully (and if someone has the moolah) put 256GB of SSD (so it doesn't use much power); power it with a solar charger and hide in a tree or in some out-of-the-

Unfortunately, the male-dominated tech world is pretty chauvinistic when it comes to women in positions of power. If she's headstrong and takes no BS, then she must be sleeping with someone in a position of power. Now, I know that MM was LP

What we need is a dual-key encryption system. One key keeps your real data encrypted. The other key "decrypts" the drive to a benign (mostly blank) disk. If the cops ask, hand over the alternate key and stand back, bemused.
