IMHO, Digg killed Digg. In any such ecosystem where the inmates are running the asylum, pissing them off is not a good course of action. The tribe knew that it was the reason why Digg was what Digg was. But arrogance on the part of the upper management at Digg was its downfall; they couldn't come to terms with the basic fact that the people were responsible for Digg's success. So they decided to tweak it, "enhance" it, modify it to "Digg 2.0", and the people revolted. Lesson: if you are a user-driven site, listen to them. Don't piss them off.
