Who knows what will happen with at, but with e-mail owning your own domain is no longer sufficient to participate in e-mail federation. I have a domain, which I use for e-mail and multiple times per year I need to use gmail to get reliable

Turbo Pascal was an outlier in 1989 though. The funny thing is that I remember Turbo C++ being an outlier in the opposite direction. In my computer science class (which used Turbo C++), people would try to get there early in order to get o

As with many such sites I've used in the past, there are some issues with the data. Gnooks suggested one author, then the same author, but with a typo in the name. Gnoosic suggested Procol Harum, then it suggested A Whiter Shade of P

While away, I thought of an example. In baseball, the baserunners are allowed to advance to the next base at any time the ball is "in play" which includes when the pitcher (vaguely similar to bowler in cricket) is holding the ball

It doesn't matter any more or less than if an out was a line-out, fly out, or ground-ball thrown to first.

I helped someone extract data from one of those old DOS personal-database software programs. He had recorded every scorecard from every game he went to for many years. Each year had its own floppy disk.

This is somewhat funny because many of my classes in school barely even managed a veneer of objectivity in scoring, and grades for many things were far more opaque than any annual review I've had at my job. - In general any class with

Maybe things have changed in the past two decades, but I definitely would have been fired from my retail job if I showed up drunk. The POS interface there was super non-intuitive, but very efficient. This was 20 years ago so the classic t

Does "cursive font" do anything useful on windows or popular linux distributions? I haven't used either of those for about 20 years. I know on Macs a decade ago, it used to display the lovely Zapfino font, but on Windows XP

I just haven't seen CoCs effectively reduce the bigots in a community; they either are toothless, or have teeth and lead to a j'accuse breakdown. It is a tiny fraction of the people I know and have interacted with over an extended

Two ways I've seen it come up: 1. Someone posts something on twitter that someone else finds offensive 2. Someone proposes a CoC rule banning bigots from the community, which raises the question of "who defines who is a bigot"

A manager must trust those people who are closer to the problem to make such decisions. When, in hindsight, it looks like the trust is habitually abused, the scalable solution isn't to micromanage that person, it's to fire them.
