I completely agree with you. My comment was made in regards of removing plastics for your health. Not a comment on capitalism or equating individual action to system reform.

Yeah I don’t see why not. I’ve collaborated with a handful of scientists of indigenous backgrounds who still practice their culture. That’s never even been a contradiction in their head. Living a sustainable life doesn’t impact or hinder s

I’m aware that consumption of microplastics is a huge problem. (Hey HN reader. Get rid of plastic from your life. Doing future you a favor.) But the sample size cited was just six babies from New York. Seems a bit too small for such a concl

Trees are part of the solution. If we were to reforest the world you begin to encounter other issues like land for farming(although agroforestry helps with this), land for solar farms/nuclear, etc. It is annoyingly complex. I would a

This is a great idea! Inspires me to do the same for areas of research I’m passionate about I’ve heard from life science professors in my undergrad one of the hard parts about keeping up to date with research is just finding it. Really hope

> Are the lessons we could apply to lead sustainable lifestyles without abandoning the progress of science, and all the health improvements it brought? I have met very few people who try to live sustainable lifestyles but actively deny s

A decent video on the topic: https://youtu.be/u3aauiR9M88 Just to add my +1. I have also never seen Solarpunk as a "just slap solar panels on houses" but rather using the minimum possible technology to enhance wha

Adding more methane(or any GHG) doesn’t cut emissions. That’s why it doesn’t qualify Results > ideology Snark aside we have already have low/no emission energy alternatives. Nuclear, wind, and solar. No need to pretend that gas is p

I cannot tell this if this is sarcasm or a misunderstanding of evolution, but I’m imaging a dystopian future where humans genetically modify themselves to consume plastic but are no longer able to eat the foods we eat today. Now that’s a go

These are all great questions, but I am out of my element here. Microplastics & land usage aren’t my areas of expertise (just a casual interest) so I'm hoping someone else can come along and give you informative answers.

1. Toxins over large timescales.(also I’m assuming they aren’t the only thing in the landfill) Most modern plastics won’t leech toxins onto your food in the short time it takes from field to fridge. However microplastics are a concern and t

2. The alternative could be not using oil at all here. I don’t remember our ancestors needing plastic packaging to eat fruit. Plastic packaging doesn’t always get buried either. Landfills aren’t exactly a solution because of toxins they lee

Yes 100%. This is a really important point. We need to protect and expand natural areas around the world. Forests do use land(that could go to solar energy farms or food farms) and do not sequester as much carbon as CCS. Not that I’m saying

No. We have permanent solutions already. We just need the policy to encourage their adoption and implementation. (And further research to advance the existing solutions) CCS (carbon capture & sequestration) is still needed. Even if we s

Thats a load of dung. We will no doubt be ravaged by climate change and are likely to reach 1.5 - 2 degrees warning, but we are by no means going extinct. Focus on solutions & building resislency, not doom posting on HN https:/&#x
