It isn't a "non sequitur" to point out you're part of a very small class of people taking multiple international flights a year. That isn't what that term means! Anything you view as "necessary" is very un

The trouble with zeppelins is that unloading is difficult. Every lb of weight removed from the Zeppelin is another lb of lift that has to be offset. So you have to do things like pump water into the zeppelin as people or cargo disembark. Sh

Unsurprising that someone who, from their bio, "splits their time between Seattle and London" is against this idea. The economic effects of climate change will be more catastrophic than making it take longer to move internationall

Society is not organized around individuals and groups working in mutual self-interest. Society is organized around the interests of the wealthy. Indeed, only people who are quite well-off manage to take international flights. Immigrants I

I'm not an idiot, I know why people travel by jet aircraft. These luxuries are irrelevant in the face of climate change. Society has been organized around jet travel. It can be reorganized around the reality of international travel req

A society that takes climate change seriously will replace international air travel with passenger ships featuring high-speed satellite internet and spacious work areas. Little-known fact, ocean travel is 3x more energy-efficient than even

Does anybody know of good introductory resources on error recovery techniques when writing a parser & interpreter? Bonus points if they use combinators instead of a hand-written parser.

Here's a gap in my understanding: why does bitcoin mining explode so much when the price goes up? With all the new miners, doesn't the difficulty adjustment kick in after two weeks and largely negate the price increase? Or does th

You're not missing out on anything. The Pocket Casts UI is impenetrable and I can never remember how to tell which podcasts are downloaded, which I've listened to, etc. There's some overlap with the "archive" featur

Why continue to allow the existence of these various parasitic middlemen health insurance companies with their redundant bureaucracies and the N x N billing problems, networks, etc. they introduce?

You're mostly right, although the way I see it is this: there are a few subclasses of independent contractor. At the top are people with high hourly rates who have niche skillsets and want to work on their own with minimal involvement

I also had to engage with this bodyshop arrangement. Heard a fellow contractor referring to it as "paying the pimp", which I guess has some similarities. It's worth noting that you can usually contract directly with a company

Can you describe how a formal specification system with namespacing would work?

You are assuming a huge amount about how universes are generated, a process about which we know basically nothing.

I have no idea how you could possibly assign probabilities to things like this.

Why is there forever the assumption that the universe is governed by a simple set of rules? What if the universe is actually an enormous java program with a 10,000 line Utils.java file? Also this part definitely conjures up a certain series

Thank you for this! the .as_ref() seems to solve a lot of the problems, since I guess just doing a straight .map() takes ownership of the contained string.

Here I am on day three of an attempt to modify a rust program with logic that would have taken about twenty minutes to implement in C# or Java. It has to do with operations on strings (use a regex to find a string in some text, escape all t
