SDL is great. It's such an easy way to abstract over the often ugly and always platform-specific details of how to get a window open, get it fullscreen, and get input in (including game controllers) and graphics out. Sometimes I want a

Sooner or later? You don't think the past 4-5 years, particularly the Trump presidency, isn't part of that backlash? It's only going to escalate.

I guess? If I have a video player or a game/emulator in the foreground then I think it deserves direct access to the audio device and I just don't like the idea of a userspace sound server in the middle. For a music player or what

An answer to most of these might be to fix and extend ALSA rather than wallpapering over it and treating it like abandonware.

I've used casually used Gimp since 1.1 or so (more heavily between 1.2 and 2.0 or so, then falling off), and my totally subjective impression is that the early versions were fun and straightforward, and over time they got more and more

This is really neat. Not so long ago I happened upon a disk image containing FIG-Forth for the Atari 8-bit computers and had some fun playing with it on an emulator for a couple hours - poking registers to toggle on the hardware sprites, du

I'm curious what the last Apple products are that Ive still had a hand in. Aside from fixing some obvious missteps with keyboards, the touchbar, and whatnot, I feel like their design has been heading downhill. The iPhone 12 and 13, I r

I've wondered this too, and if it's possible for a toy implementation to help teach the concepts, but I suspect not. Probably the translation to code obscures more than it illustrates.

Maybe our for-profit private prisons are far too expensive to operate. Maybe we're also too skittish about exercising the death penalty for obviously hopeless cases.

It's a real thing, but I think (extrapolating from my own experience) it's much more profound and tangible if you're starting from something like C or pre-modern C++ and then moving to something more modern and FP-flavored. M

You don't need the global variable (at least, the Scheme equivalent does not - I'm not going to lawyer over how variable capture would work in a hypothetical dialect of C++ that added call/cc). Any variable in scope to be cap
