I'd love to see if the fake water surface texture could be replaced with a procedural deformation faking waves so that the path tracing could render caustics.

Now I'm imagining an analogy to continuation passing style: exec (tail call) 'cd', tell it to exec /bin/sh (the continuation) in the modified environment.

I can definitely taste the difference brewing the same coffee via a french press versus my old fashioned percolator on the stove, and not on account of loose coffee grounds. This may be an extreme comparison as a percolator is possibly the

One of these was parked for a day or two outside a hotel across from the office building where (pre-COVID) I worked. Prior to this I wasn't certain if the wienermobile was an urban legend or what. It brings a smile to everyone that see

It's hard to appreciate the value of restarts if you haven't seen it fully integrated into the environment like on an old lisp machine. Given any exceptional condition deep down in a program, assuming appropriate restarts are boun

As a Common Lisp head, I love generic functions / multiple dispatch and would take them even over classes and inheritance as a language feature, but it's definitely cheating when the expression problem is framed in terms of static

I was boggling at how this could be tolerably efficient for someone, but I think I see it. My development workflow is terminal-centric, so copying out of the terminal to paste into a browser is extremely painful, whereas running 'diff&

Is 2 spaces really a recent obsession? This is just what emacs (and ancient emacs-likes) have always done, and how all the Lisp code (excluding that by newbies and in fringe dialects) has been formatted. CL best practice, formatting wise, i

I grew up playing Dune II on PC and finally played the Sega version a few years ago. I found it surprisingly playable - one of the controller buttons makes the cursor zip around at warp speed, and this works better than you'd expect. I

Agree, and in theory duplication is easy to refactor and clean up, but the nasty thing about duplication is that the instances can diverge in little ways, and then the person cleaning it up may not be able to tell if the differences are mea

Chuck never hesitated to change the language to fit the CPU. His various Machine Forth dialects definitely co-evolved with the hardware they targeted. In terms of making it fast, I think he was fairly successful within the constraints that

Concerning it being a simulator first and a game second, that's definitely true, but it makes me wonder if the very old 2D versions (before there was a Z-axis or fancy worldgen) was more enjoyable as a game. I didn't start playing

Much of what you're describing reminds me of Dynamic Windows, the UI on Symbolics workstations in the 80s, and CLIM (Common Lisp Interface Manager), an attempt to embody the same ideas in a vendor-neutral standard. DW/CLIM record

SBCL is great. I do think it would be a significant improvement to include a fuller featured terminal REPL out of the box (with history, s-exp editing keystrokes, completion), and that this would make a better first impression on new users

Should improve over the next few years. There are several large new Ka-band systems either currently coming online (e.g. Inmarsat GX) or under development, and market pressure to build smaller, cheaper satellite terminals.
