Oh, I don't know. How well does it have to work? If anything I'm suddenly very curious what kind of results you'd get from converting line art to distance fields, averaging/interpolating, and converting back. Maybe I

Not even the last time they did something that. Just in the past six months, I noticed I was no longer able to link against certain C++ libraries being installed via Homebrew, because some change in the ObjC runtime meant that whatever I wa

I got a copy of KEE with my Symbolics when I bought it in 2001 or so, but never had any idea what it was for or how to use it.

I always thought using e-mail in this would be good for systems that occasionally need a human in the loop. Normally one service processes and mails results to the next, occasionally something is forwarded to a human, who can make some deci

Were you limited by GPU capacity, would you intentionally downplay the potential benefit to further scaling the model so as to discourage competitors (e.g., Google) who would be less GPU-limited from pursuing such a direction themselves? I

Neat. Funny enough I've recently considered writing sort of the exact opposite of this - a FUSE FS that maps every package and symbol of a running lisp image into the filesystem, so that the value of variables could be read/writte

I'm very excited by the recent CADR revival, but the original MIT system does feel primitive compared to the later Symbolics releases.

Same here, pretty much. I didn't even write it. I asked GPT-4 for the code from the API playground, and it just worked.

It's a funny thing that you remind me of just now - I seem to recall, quite some time ago - 10+ years ago, probably - an exasperated article on Ars Technica arguing against ad blockers, when literally within the past few weeks I'd

Thank you for your article. I had difficulty understanding the "Binary search implementation" section of the original article for various reasons, despite knowing what binary search is, being familiar with the 2k/2k+1 encodin

Sometimes you have to NIH to understand why things the way they are. Granted, it's hard to justify on the company dime. From the perspective that 99% of software is awful and writing more is making things worse, I'm sympathetic to

I used to use ECL a bit, and in hindsight I really wish it emitted C++ rather C, even if the generated code was only using C features.

Sometime around 1998/1999 (Q3A-era) I recall John Carmack commenting, probably either in a .plan entry or at Quakecon, that you could calculate arbitrary RenderMan shaders using ye old 1.1-ish fixed-function OpenGL given enough renderi

Seems unlikely. The performance ratio of native code vs. Python is hundreds of times. The original game targeted roughly 100 MHz CPUs. Computers have gotten faster since 1998, but not that much faster in terms of single-threaded performance

That's funny, my fantasy superyacht / submarine mashup lately has been of a submarine from which I could torpedo all the superyachts as they slink from port to port with their AIS transponders off.

Yeah, I suppose the "run it local and on a budget" crowd isn't that big, but maybe they do have some free time to improve the software ecosystem.
