Let's not be so naive about this, it happens all the time and humanity is not permanently lost. Example USA vs Indians: At first you come up with some justifications for the bad stuff you are doing, then you kind of forget about it ove

It's also useless if every tool lives in its own copy of the universe - there'd be little to no identical files. It also won't work for version control databases, assuming use of a distributed VCS.

IMO screw that. It's maybe a good way to build software in exactly one environment for exactly one environment, deployment to a corporate server fleet. Consider a Linux desktop distro: if every little binary (out of order of magnitude

I'm honestly relieved to see that I'm not the only one to test optimized/newer implementations against less optimized/older implementations. It's what I came up with after thinking about it for quite a while and I&#

That seems like a fantastic idea, I hope it goes through and gets widely imitated in other countries. I imagine that the usual villain gallery will launch a panicked lobbying initiative behind the scenes.

Not exactly that, but one thing that comes to mind: Germany was about to switch the phone network to fiber with data service in the late 80s(!), but then Helmut Kohl (CDU chancellor) decided to build TV cable instead. He wanted to promote p

While TDP isn't the whole truth, a pretty solid rule of thumb is that a CPU will at most use about 2x TDP. That is still not that much here. That said, GPUs look like they mostly vent to outside the case, but that is largely untrue.

That's a bit bullshit, isn't it? They basically redefined "needs more R&D" as "needs stronger AI". Maybe so - maybe AI won't help much with that problem.

The, ahem, good thing here is that the ASI disaster scenario "everyone dies" includes AI executives.

The east has never been economically very strong, it used to be huge feudal-style farms and a bit of high-tech industry (planes, optics, trains, electronics in the 1930s). Not too different from now. Then there was the GDR which made things

They don't glorify drugs, the image of stoners over there is at least as bad as in other European countries. The narco trouble is mostly because the country is a huge logistics hub.

Mentioning evil Soros is like a 100% reliable political crackpot indicator, even though this here is a quite original take. He is usually an evil Jewish globalist, i.e. a nefarious leftist. I think he seriously pissed off the right people i

GP was possibly arguing against Herb Sutter's "almost always auto". C++ wasn't designed for auto and it shows. You can't rely on it always doing the right thing or at least a safe thing in C++, unlike in Rust - I&#x

I don't know what you mean with family roadtrips being prohibited? Maybe too expensive, that's all I can think of. Cheap motels are rare and, obviously, fuel is much more expensive. All other necessities are easily available and l

I'm more surprised how cheap it is in browsers because I know it's not that easy - they are really really good at it. Pure text rendering is therefore rarely an issue.

Yeah, but if your website with, you know, text and stuff, doesn't do any stupid and unnecessary crap, it doesn't matter where the nonexistent unnecessary yet expensive code doesn't run.
