I don't mean to try to sum up the entirety of academia in my post, just some issues relevant to the topic at hand. Your experience, much like my post, isn't exhaustive. Have I said something wrong that should be debunked?

I recently did some copyediting for a chinese econ PhD student in the US. She isn't a student at my university, or even a research assistant. She's just a guest, who is being partially supervised by professors in our econ department. Why is

I don't intend to jump into the ring, but as an observer, I don't think we're at that point yet. Here's the progression of the current anti-PHP flare up: Jeff Atwood says PHP sucks |- Says we should make other languages fill in on wh

He shouldn't get a lawyer--he should change the name. The gain for getting to name it pandora exists exclusively in his ego. A prudent person wouldn't hire a lawyer for the sake of his ego.

If whats around 5-10 years from now represents the same improvement RoR has made over PHP in the last 5 years, we better be mad when developers working on team projects try to perpetuate RoR's use.

I think he's implying that if there was a question about it being shared with other organizations in the government (or other governments or defense contractors), they would use that to justify not re-releasing the code.

I don't think the UX is too complicated. Its smart, though somewhat troublesome because its not something your users would be familiar with (bookmarklets?). To be clear, its unfamiliar, not complicated. If you're getting the users to instal

Most doctors are entrepreneurs. They basically operate consultancy firms, either through some kind of partnership or independently. They may not be innovators, but innovation isn't necessary for entrepreneurship.

This type of 'noise' is easy to weed out. Its not really even noise--its just a question of how he wants to define his population. With a good team of people who know SQL, he can pull data from any population he chooses, and can make any st

A statistic estimates a parameter of a population. If you have the population, you don't need statistics because you already know the parameters. Having 'all the data' sidesteps any possible need to use statistics outside of forecasting, wh

I'll be even more bold and declare that the top 1% has no more ability to effect the median than any other 1% of the population. Using the median isn't strange at all for this kind of calculation.

Just a comment about definitions for the uninitiated: the term "luxury good" is a technical term in economics. We use something called "income elasticity" to compare goods which is simply the ratio of (% change in quantity/% change price).

to be fair, i think HN is pretty much the only place that the comparison is being made, and most of the support comes from DDG's support for 'hackers' and because a lot of people here really don't like google and microsoft.
