You should start a company in an environment where it is not an echo chamber for you. Start a company where the people in the community bring a different perspective, because this will ultimately help you get a better picture of the world.

I guess what I don't really get is why Ulrich couldn't just post a simplified explanation for the code he checked in. As one commenter put it, to an outside observer Ulrich comes across as an arse. Even if the technical explanation can't r

I think the topics seem a little too contrived. For example - who is really going to go looking for training in the "Politics" category? There may be some things, but I don't know that many people would look for it there. My suggestion: le

I totally understand what this guy is trying to explain. I get invites from folks that were in diapers when I graduated high school, and I always feel that I have to be careful how I interact with them. This is especially true for girls.

It's not hard to write portable C++ code that doesn't cast pointers, and it's really not that hard to write C++ that doesn't "touch" memory cells. Being able to access the Java class library and 3rd party APIs from C++ could be very useful

Interesting title: small-town life may mean big money . Plano is anything but a small town, at least by the American perspective. It is the quintessential suburb of a top-ten city, and thoroughly enmeshed in the metropolitan area. Only s

I don't grok OCaml at all, since I've never even laid eyes on it, but I identified with his personal story of moving from one mind-warp to the next as he matured as a developer. I've now hit the OMG! Functional Programming! stage myself, w

The study, however, leaves us with yet another question of this sort: why do boys appear to read so poorly? We clearly can't ascribe it to social inequality, but that doesn't mean it isn't due to some other social factor. This is just stu

See my later comment about expected errors versus unexpected ones. Exceptions were never meant to replace good error-handling code.

I was the same way in school. I also used pico for a long time, and for a while after that, I used vim, but only with the bare minimum necessary for edit, save, up, down, left, right. I finally had a teacher that required us to use Emacs,

This kind of argument also seems to miss something important: that exceptions (at least in C++, but this argument probably applies to other languages as well) aren't intended as a general-purpose error-handling mechanism, which return codes

I bought a 1996 Ford Ranger (4 cyl, no extras) that had been totaled due to flood damage for $1600. Runs great, gets ~22-25 mpg. It's an aluminum frame, two cloth seats, a powertrain, wheels, and a bed for loading crap. Most modern featur
