The most costly, of course, are private schools (which is where my daughter wants to go). However, the "financial back-up plan" of in-state 4-year universities is not exactly affordable either. In-state cost of UCLA, for example,

Speaking as a parent, the state of higher education is shocking. Costs of $300,000 for a 4-year degree ($75K/year for tuition, fees, and housing) is not just possible, it's essentially the norm for many schools that aren't ev

Apple bought NextVR (and shuttered or stealthed it), whose sports-broadcast-in-VR platform was fantastic even years ago when I watched NBA games in my original Rift. No one has really stepped into that space since. Concerts in VR are a real

Put the salt in tanker ships and dump it out at sea across a wide area. Cargo ships are massive, and desal plants would likely be in bays (i.e., not on "wild coasts") where there are ample loading docks in nearby harbors. Again, s

I'm confused as to your proposed solution. Should the new employees not been hired, and existing employees overworked due to understaffing? Should they have hired contractors and not paid benefits like healthcare? The companies I'

I agree the topic is complex and fraught. I have opinions but they're not strongly held or informed by debate, and unfortunately I don't think even a generally well-moderated forum like HN is the best place to have that debate (pl

There is a fundamental question this article (and most debate) overlooks: what is the objective of the content moderation? Is it to avoid all hate in an equal way? Or is it to reduce potential harm? If the latter (which I would argue is the

A single senator and an entire political party OP is right. Manchin gets the blame but 50 others voted against it as well, many who would be willing to cross the aisle but for the toxic partisan environment in this country.

My understanding is that a new equilibrium can only be found, in general, when the net new input(s) to a system have stopped changing. The amount of atmospheric CO2 continues to grow linearly[1] at best. The earth's climate may find a
