As a person who strongly identifies with the post-enlightenment ideals of individuality, liberty (original definition) and rights, and agrees with the strategy of empiricism as a means to understand and bend the world, I can't help but

I certainly can relate to everything that the author expresses. However, I'm also quite certain that this is not exclusive to the software engineering disciplines. Somewhere around 2004 or so, I began seeing many US companies (includin

Is it standard practice? Yes... But, it is always negotiable. I'm not even near Carmack (I'm actually a big slacker), but each time that I am given an offer, I always negotiate IP rights. I have tons of ideas and have owned seve

It seems like you're knowledgeable on this subject. Could you explain the '8 year' approval process and what that means? I was recently reading some information that suggested that the FDA approval process is more like 8-10 m

I truly wish that most communities of practice were more like what you describe. But, it's also naive to expect that experts won't criticize, sometimes even harshly. For instance, I am currently learning data science from the grou

Store energy when it's cheap. Sell it when it's not. You could do it on the market and make money (I know of a couple companies that do this). But, the technology is applicable to other areas, as well.

Thanks for the clarification. Great info!! (And, even more happy to be able to pull an expert lurker into the fray).

Not only is it not a new thought, but it's been the holy grail of large software companies for at least 30 years. You'd be surprised at how much money has been spent researching this problem. And, for those just coming into softwa

Do the interviewers view your FB account before an interview? Seems legally risky because of the potentially sensitive information (i.e. family, children, health, etc.).

If you all are interested in the 'deregulated' energy markets in the US, you may want to check out PJM. Via PJM (and similar regional transmission organizations), you can trade energy and even hook in your own generators and stora

Could you elaborate more on that? I'm not discounting it, but the viewpoint is unfamiliar to me. I don't see taxes as involuntary. In fact, it's clearly documented how much tax I'm expected to pay in order to receive the

I generally try not to get political online; I don't find it very effective (e.g. how many people's opinions have really changed based on their online readings?) However, in this case, I do want to provide a couple contrarian view

Somewhere around 12-18 months ago, I tried to switch, and it was awful. I had to continuously go back to Google. 2 months ago, I tried again, and since then, I've only had to go back to Google maybe 5% of the time. So, either DDG has r

Fuck you money is great. I love having it, and I wear it as a badge of honor, like a proud asshole. What it gives me is leverage. I am your average, software engineering looking dude. I'm not very aggressive or overly eager. But, I

Although I can't discuss much, I've seen similar techniques used years ago. Or, in other words, it's fairly easy to come up with new signiture producing schemes. That's why some people disable Javascript.

Interestingly enough, 12% of Computer and Information Science degrees in the US are awarded to Blacks [1][2]. That is in contrast to 9% that are awarded to Asians. But also, 13% of the population is Black, and 5% of the population is Asian

Democracies are 'design by committee', and that's a feature not a bug. Democracies are ugly, inefficient, buggy, and bloated. Most people don't get what they want, but they agree to form a union because they know that th
