The algorithms are tuned for engagement - a blind result of massive A/B testing. People engage with content that causes fear, addiction, get-rich quick schemes, and ideology. I quit FB years ago when I started feeling like something wa

Really eye-opening for me. I grew up pretty poor, like no heat or plumbing or bed poor. And, I pretty much have all the low-status behaviors. It reminds me of reading Sapolsky's "Behave" which discusses a lot about physiologi

Yeah, apparently I have a very high IQ but I still suck at programming. I often wonder if they tested me wrong, but I was tested twice. IDK Anyone else like this? Maybe I have a learning disability or something.

In my wife's experience, men are generally less friendly to women in the corporate environment. In fact, as she climbs the ladder, she finds that the men are more aggressive and hositle toward her. For her, she just wants to get the sa

It's hit or miss. Sometimes, I give it relatively complex requirements, and it spits out a running program. Worst case, it at least points me in the right direction. I save well over an hour a month with it, so it's worth it.

The companies paying 3x median income are trying to hire smart people, not necessarily ones with particular skills.

It's a power law. The middle class also grew, less substantially. 86% of the world's population are wealthy enough to afford to own a smart phone. To me, that's pretty amazing.

About 1.5 billion people were raised out of extreme poverty over about 30 years arguably because of capitalism. Similarly, large global middle classes have built up over that time. It feels like we should keep doing what we've been doi

I had an interview recently where I was given a 1000 line, deeply stacked conditional and asked to traverse it. Like, what are they selecting for? I hope that’s not demonstrative of their source code.

I love that high-profile people like you are taking risks and innovating with hiring. Thank you. I'm hoping to see some change in the industry. There are probably a lot of high-performing people who have little motivation to go through

Yeah I’m being dumb. I was thinking of MCTS with infinite depth where the path through time that’s taken (wave function collapse) is the optimal path for some reward function (maybe complexity?).

Does it depend on what type of simulation? For example, if it’s an optimization problem, couldn’t you tell statistically by looking at macroscopic events?

I've recently started seeing job postings that say at the bottom "Mail physical resume" - is that the new brown M&M test? Also, can't the hiring process be improved with optimal stopping?
