It's all about creating a chain of value. Why should the chefs and cleaners have to expend energy hunting for their own voles? Far better to allow predators to take them to the cleaners. (/s for if the idiom doesn't translate

No such button on my machine. Even when I disable 'reduce motion' per my other comment. (I did try on my iPhone and the REW button is present)

Thanks, that was it. Nice to see Apple respecting my UX wishes. On my iPhone I see a 'REW' button which plays another video, but it doesn't show on my Mac.

I see people mentioning an animation? I see only a large apple logo and some words. What else are people seeing? (Firefox on Mac OS. Also Safari on Mac OS)

I hope you can take on trust that this is a genuine, exploration of the original point about language. And FTR I have a very low opinion of MS and have had since the late 90s. There are usually all kinds of twists and turns in a HN discussi

There are all kinds of language registers for communication. From formal business speak to 'locker room banter'. What is appropriate or otherwise depends entirely on the participants of the conversation. So, it depends on what kin

Thoughtful and empathetic use of language is about as far from Newspeak as you can get.

I agree with stndef. "Flowers after beating" is a very direct evocation of physical abuse in an intimate relationship. Whether or not you think it's appropriate.

My general principle has been “don’t build what you can’t test locally”. It seems so obvious but PaaS does challenge it. It also has the benefit of steering clear of exotic proprietary features that are hard to migrate between providers. Lo

Lots of people familiar with the material here, but as somone with zero context, I watched the film and I don't get it. Is it something where you need to know the backstory to get the importance? The premise just seems quite thin: (Spo

Same feeling as pair programming in my experience. If your consciousness is driving, your brain is internally aligned. You type as you think. You can get flow state, or at least find a way to think around a problem. If you're working w

Any workload that relies on re-using a bucket name is broken by design. If someone else can get it, then it's Undefined Behaviour. So it's in keeping with the contract for AWS to prevent re-use. Surely?

The original solution involved a very thick disc which could then leveled and re-pitted. The problem was that the change in mass over time made it hard to calibrate the acceleration. It also put a high radial load on the spindle whilst moun

More anecdata. Lego from my youth, which was a hand-me down at the time, doesn't fit well with new lego. So it might be 40 years old, (which seems like a long time until you actually reach that age!) I think it's more likely do to

Cool, thanks. I approve! In a pure world everyone would use DOIs to refer to published literature. This would give two benefits: first, always link to the current version. Second, be a persistent identifier for the content. But HN isn'
