I look for code over personality but I have learned that there are intolerable people who you just can't hire. Some people are literally crazy. They come in flavors of "don't touch my code", screaming rage fits, and crying emotional break

I think the goal of design is to make the aesthetics match the functionality. In software, the greatest challenge is making something that at it's core is very complex, with all of the code that it takes to make it happen, and make it simp

I really hope that things don't change and the US continues to be a location for these high value jobs. Yes, this is very hard to maintain. I couldn't agree more. The point I am trying to make is that outsourcing is a sign that the US ha

I don't think that we do. My post was largely spent explaining why jobs move overseas, which is not the same as agreeing on what to do about it. He concludes that protectionist policies will result in manufacturing jobs staying in the US,

I really like the fair tax, but it bothers me that it is regressive. I know it is the same % for everyone, and there is the rebate at the poverty line, but the wealthy spend a much smaller percentage of their money at the retail level. Wh

I find this line of thinking very disturbing. Mr. Grove follows others in believing a common fallacy, by ignoring secondary effects, and fails to see how issues in macroeconomics affect each other. Where to start... The American standard

It sounds like you are new to the area. It has been unusually wet recently, but give it time. It will be back to hot and dry soon enough.

Malcolm Gladwell covered a great story in Blink about the success of decision trees in diagnosing Chest Pain at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. The doctors were very resistant to using the tools. I wonder if we will just have to wait for

Login can be a verb, we just haven't collectively decided how to conjugate it. Correct in language is usually more a function of convention rather than functionality. There just aren't rules to handle this. It can either be "he logs in"

This is what works for me. Get up Saturday morning and go edit you hosts file and block off the 3 most common sites that you waste time on. Now, pack up your laptop and go to a coffee shop. This will eventually lead you to break the habi

It annoys me that every 40 year old thinks that the world is getting worse. I used to think it was just the less intelligent people who's minds couldn't keep up with the rate of change. But to hear Jobs say it was disheartening. Death rat

Yes, and then they learn all about source control. It's really not that hard and is pretty easy to learn. Hence why you don't need to pay someone to teach it to you.

I think there are two points. The conventional use of this argument is the one you are talking about, and that is why I said at the end of my post that it IS useful for that. However, the article specifically says “So, I guess we're not c

I agree that is what he is saying, but as far as I can tell, that is crap. What is so magical about native apis? If a middleware application calls an api and it changes, it breaks, but the same is true for a native application.

It's funny, even though Apple has resisted messing up the hardware, there is still that "Sent from my iPhone" message which always struck me as having no taste at all. It is different because you can remove it, but still.
