Yeah, the current yearly contract payment they get from Google seems to remove any sense of urgency or need to grow market share. I obviously don’t know the details but I haven’t heard of performance incentives or anything, because if Firef

DuckDuckGo has billboards. Mozilla has money. I think share growth is expressly a non-goal from Mozilla leadership, judging by some of the other comments.

Plenty of Firefox users do not actually care about free & open and they're the ones who we lost in the greatest numbers. Recognizing and addressing their needs is important.

There was a massive grassroots Firefox campaign in the aughts. It was very successful at growing share and I was proud to participate. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36760016

I was a diehard Firefox user in the aughts, running a bunch of extensions and recommending it to people. I switched to Chrome the first day it became available, because it was just so much faster. You don't need a monopoly or advertisi

Fiber is rarely the only service, because just about everywhere that gets fiber also has DOCSIS due to the prevalence of cable TV. So it might be because of competition more than anything.

It is not just an issue of deceptive marketing. If the FCC intervenes minimally and just mandates a data cap disclosure (that most won’t read), you will still be stuck with a cap.

How do I choose between Rocky and Almalinux? Or is it just not a big enough difference to worry about?

Look up the “I still don’t care about cookies” browser extension. I can definitely see why people want to have the choice, but I simply don’t care and don’t want to be interrupted.

Might be part of the explanation but I'm surprised every time I see European anecdata online like: > The product wasn't what I wanted but I can't return it to the shop because it is not defective. Maybe the retail environm

Noticing defects while underway has been automated by trackside detectors for decades, ever since the removal of the caboose and associated crewman. In this case, we know the detector went off as designed, and what happened - or did not hap

I am amused by how much remixing of facts is happening. On Reddit, I learned that the railroad was negligent for not replacing the rails since the Civil War.

We do know that the crew was notified of the hot axle by an automatic defect detector. I don't think we know yet what their reaction was. If they didn't brake... then the brake technology had no effect. If they did brake, more sop

Hey, that's my project! (And geoffjentry is my former boss.) Nice to hear the praise, thank you. The project has changed a lot over time and inevitably left some disappointed people filing Github issues (CWL, non-cloud backends, etc).

1. I'm on the product engineering side rather than data, but from what I know, Scala is still heavily entrenched. New projects are all in Java; other languages are effectively disallowed. 2. I learned a fair amount in the 2017-2019 tim

I have no specific experience with compilers (I missed the chance to take the class in college due to scheduling conflicts). My current day job, at a research nonprofit, is working on a system whose behavior is driven by an external DSL. I
