Worth noting that Labour's manifesto mentions investigating a Land Value Tax as a replacement for council tax and business rates [0]. OK, unlikely to happen, but the best chance we have for reform in the near-to-medium term. [0] http:

The capitalists who funded the mass propaganda effort to deny the reality of climate change - what is their endgame? Are they simply hoping to maintain the status quo as long as possible and bleed the planet (and public) dry in the meantime

To be clear, Rust only panics from integer overflow when in debug mode. In release mode it will silently overflow just as happily as C.

London is far too diverse for this comparison to make sense. It has ten times the population of San Francisco. If you think London is a particular way, it is probably because the bit of London you are in is that way.

I second this. Build a compiler from scratch. Main annoyance is that it uses SML - most readers are likely to want to use OCaml, and it's a bit fiddly translating between the two.

These sorts of articles are starting to pop up a bit more frequently, presumably because Rust is starting to get a bit of traction. The theme is "I know $LOW_LEVEL_LANGUAGE therefore I should be able to program Rust. I spent a few days

It's a little underwhelming: [0] I enjoyed visiting Tokio (Tokyo) the city and I liked the "io" suffix and how it plays w/ Mio as well. I don't know... naming is hard so I didn't spend too much time

This was my first thought. Of course their jobs can be automated. Automation increases the productivity of the average employee to the point where fewer employees are needed. Investment bankers are extremely vulnerable to this given how muc

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but when wasm is fully established I expect to see (another) step change in the complexity of the web. Fully-featured applications, 3D, VR, AR etc. We are on the brink of it already. And beyond a

Rust is indeed known for memory safety and zero cost abstractions. But there is another side to Rust which is even more interesting - a type system that is almost as powerful as those of functional languages like OCaml and Haskell, but wrap

Write your Rust app. Compile to a binary on the backend, wasm on the frontend, using asyncio to communicate transparently between the two. Update the DOM directly from wasm, with 60fps rendering from Servo's WebRender. Totally typesaf

One of the points Piketty makes in his book is that the rich generally aren't the heroic creative geniuses of Ayn Rand's imagination. Most wealth is inherited. Wealth grows faster than the economy at large. The rich get richer. Th

Video is a high-bandwidth way of delivering information at a low bandwidth. But try watching tech videos at 1.5 speed, it makes them much more engaging. Also works for ponderous anime.

I don't think many people blame globalisation. They blame neoliberalism, of which globalisation is just a small part. Neoliberalism is a political project that has been dominant in the West since the mid '80s. Other elements of ne
