On the flip side, I have a hard time imagining how a homeless drug addict will be able to kick drugs while on the street and then somehow find a house and then become a 'meaningful' member of society without support. They basicall

It’s ridiculous to expect him to add an opportunity cost to a concrete cost in this example. They’re different units, even if they can be expressed nominally in dollars. He described both in their own terms, it doesn’t invalidate his claim.

You’re correct, the transactional part is true, but MasterCard is following a relatively basic process: 1. Authenticate the transaction (is this ‘uber’ Company ok and is it reasonable this user is using it for fraud detection) 2. Check that

I don’t think added complexity is a ‘feature’ us front end devs strive for. Instead, there are a lot of useful UX abstractions that are increasingly expected by users and are becoming extraordinarily tricky to roll on your own. Yeah there’s

What would an application platform look like that isn’t a ‘document’ delivery platform? In my opinion, the ability of your browser to be essentially the OS of the web was responsible for the second great explosion in usefulness of computers

I'm with you, because I've walked to work right through 3rd and pike/pine and 2nd for ~5 years now every day and, yeah, it's not ideal, but I also don't live out this post-societal collapse fantasy in my head every

Outside of the keyboard fiasco what else has Apple designed that’s so bad? I quite like Face ID, the latest gen iPad Pro, and even the new Mac mini, and Mac Pro. Sure the keyboards were bad, but like it or not Apple has a pretty obvious goa

I love how this was quite literally just litigated yet you're here assuming the entire legal process for this case was a sham.

I remember taking numerous vocabulary tests and quizzes in grade school where the definitions given were of the ‘modern’ type in this article. I wonder if the change in the dictionary was driven by a test based approach to learning the lang

That doesn’t seem to be his point to me at all. Just because the definitions he is referencing are a century old, doesn’t mean he will suddenly start writing in an anachronistic manner. His point to me is the modern dictionary has lost a lo

It takes a long time for housing to get built, or rather upzoned, bought out by a private developer, deconstructed and then rebuilt. It would have looked absolutely foolish 10 years ago to start the process of upzoning and building as much

I didn't turn a 180. I laid out that housing supply cannot keep up with the rise in demand in my first two paragraphs, which leads to the conclusion that the rise in demand will result in a rise in prices.

I cannot imagine how you feel right now. I've only been inside once two years ago, and I am devastated to see this structure burn. Can you perhaps comment on what restoration work may have caused this?

If I recall correctly, items are priced based on their rarity, which doesn’t change. So an uncommon thing is 800 vbucks (~$8) up to 2000 for a legendary item/skin. Imo the shop isn’t as much of a dark pattern. The game is just construc

What is with this comment on Hacker News? This is not appropriate. GP gave his experience with Blue Apron and you’re here picking fights about his marriage? I understand if you’re not a fan of Blue Apron, if so, try to stay on message.

Hey thanks for writing this out. I’ve felt similarly about quite a few hacker news discussions lately. I worry that HN is turning into hot takes and gotchas and getting away from enthusiastic curiosity.
