You can. The standard is new, but it exists, and now works on Gnome, KDE and wlroots based compositors https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PipeWire (read past the intro paragraph to where it talks about the various ba

For the same reason that it can make sense to say that python is more powerful than C, even though you can obviously do more things with C than with python. Xdotool lets you send keystrokes to a particular window, even if it's not in f

Screen recording was something that couldn't just be copied over from X when building wayland, because the way X does it lets any application just read any visible data from any other application with a window open. Avoiding that kind

why doesn't it gain more momentum? It has plenty of momentum. The two main desktop environments have wayland ports. Several distros ship wayland by default. without providing a compatibility layer Wayland does provide a compatibi

You think that having to close an application in order to move it to a different screen is no big deal, but you think that wayland is lacking critical features? Features more critical than being able to move windows freely? I really am curi

No, that does not solve the issue. Not using a compositor definitely makes tearing worse, on top of a number of other things, but even with a compositor, you'll get tearing on X, at least using intel graphics.

Maybe it's overhyped, but tearing does make me feel like I'm using an amateur OS, especially when I'm using X for some weeks and then hop over to wayland or Mac or Windows, and the picture looks stable.

You're right, I guess it's the cargo cult interpretation of "premature optimization is the root of all evil" that's the issue.

Warnings against premature optimization suggest a two-pass strategy, where in the first pass you avoid trading increased performance for increased labor, and then in the second pass you do whatever is needed to make the performance good eno

An important note is that reading is entirely auxiliary to philosophy. The important thing is to think, and to interact with others who are thinking, either orally or in writing. I'd even go so far as to say you could be a philosopher

You usually want to know when you're hitting the database. "Hit the database if the value isn't cached" is useful behavior, but should probably be telegraphed a bit more precisely than just the word "size".
