I usually like new programming languages, but from just the key features that they list on the front page, I thought "wtf, this is like java/c++ that compiles to PHP just to make it slower". The only advantage I can see is that it lets you

IMO this puts PHP's syntax on par with other languages. Unfortunately the libraries still suffer from multiple conflicting conventions.

I know C, java, JavaScript, ruby, python (sorta), etc.

Ask HN: I know Haskell, Clojure, Scheme. Should I learn CL?

an earlier comment pointed out that there is no similarity between elm and coffeescript except that they compile to JavaScript. coffeescript is just JavaScript in a new syntax. Elm brings a new paradigm to the web.

clojure has more jobs because it can work with existing java projects out of the box, with no need to refactor at all (to make it work, you would probably want to organize things in a more clojure-friendly way). Haskell has remarkable inter

yeah, I agree, use python in the way it was meant to be used. If you're dying in python because it's not as cool as Haskell, but you need to use some existing python code, it's not that hard to run a Haskell program as a child process of py

also in Data.List (which is a fairly common import) there are a few, like (\\) which is list difference ([1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] \\ [1, 3, 6] == [2, 4, 5]), and I can't really think of any others. There aren't really that many, though some modul

What I was saying is that the reason the payments are monthly for web services is because they are exactly that services , in addition to products. I, as a student on a low budget, feel more secure buying a desktop app at a one-time cost a

The author fails to realize that not all programming is either web programming or desktop software programming. This is just a subset of programming: software development. It's reasonable to assume that all software development will one day

I'm a sophomore in high school and I completely understand your dilema. I would say just _do_ it. Build the app (or other type of project) you've always wanted to, and complete every part of it. You'll need to hire a designer if you want pe

I started writing some of my code in coffeescript a while ago, but then I started a coffeescript project that grew into a file of 2000 lines and it became very hard to skim the code and gather meaning from it because of the lack of parenthe

I wrote this post, and am alarmed by the publicity it's getting and the controversy it's causing. I NEVER meant this to be used to solve any problem, nor to be used in a real life situation at all. I didn't mean this as a joke or as satire.

Yes I suppose `configurable` should be enabled. The reason I used delete instead of setting to null is that null is considered just as important a value as any other and if you had an outrageous number of nulls, it could consume a noticeabl
