Hehe, yeah, that sentence doesn't sound particularly simple. :-) Check out the code snippets I linked to from that blog post. It's pretty easy, I promise -- the tricky thing is just figuring out the various APIs.

You can use S3's CORS support to allow your users to upload directly to S3 without even touching your server. Downside is that it can be hard to debug and it requires your users to use JavaScript -- but otherwise it's a big win. See http:/

Hey -- I didn't spend much time exploring SVG, to be honest. It could very well be faster! And you're right that it would be much better on retina screens. I've had it on my to-do list to make the canvas implementation take the device pixel

Hey, thanks for the feedback! What were you doing with Soundslice when it felt slow -- were you zoomed out (such that there were a ton of annotations visible on the page)? Or was it just slow in general, even when it was zoomed in?

This is exactly the problem we're solving with Soundslice: http://www.soundslice.com/ It syncs tabs with real audio recordings so that you get the usability of tab plus the rhythm and phrasing cues from the real recording.

For folks who don't know the Django world: Malcolm was one of the most prolific Django contributors. If you use Django, you use code he wrote. I wrote a remembrance here: http://www.holovaty.com/writing/malcolm/

Yes, I don't mess around or BS on my blog. Take it at face value, cause that's how I meant it. I'd been working on EveryBlock full-time for five years, and I'd maintained chicagocrime.org (the precursor) for two years before that, so I was

I've been working on Soundslice full time since I left EveryBlock at the end of August 2012: http://www.soundslice.com/ (blog post: http://www.holovaty.com/writing/goodbye-everyblock/ ) It has nothing to do with local news or journalism

Sorry about that -- try changing "scrolling" from Autoscroll to Paged, and that should fix it.

Hey, thanks for subscribing, and for the kind words! I've transcribed a bunch of my own stuff and plan on doing more in the coming weeks (it's a win/win -- good marketing for Soundslice and people get to learn the arrangements). And, yes,

Thank you! :-) How much does the lack of a share button prevent you from "manually" sending the link to friends via Twitter/Facebook by copying and pasting? (I'm asking honestly -- and I'd like to prevent the site from getting gunked up wit

This is a great point. There's a (low) threshold on how many annotations need to be in a song before it shows up in "Latest by others" -- maybe a good quick fix would be to raise that.

Thanks! There's nothing stopping people from adding lyrics as "basic track" annotations, aside from the awkward question of "do I annotate each word separately, or phrases?" The site doesn't require email verification to start using it... W

Thank you! Yes, a few of the videos have chords marked on tab tracks (e.g., "Chord fingering" on http://www.soundslice.com/yt/Y6ti5f-LHp4/ ) but I'm planning to add a first-class chord track type. To exit looping mode, just press Pause? Or

Thank you! Yes, standard notation is on the to-do list. It's obviously much more complicated than tabs, so I opted not to do it for launch. Is the console error happening consistently for certain videos, or is it sporadic?

Thanks! I definitely plan to add sheet music as a track type. It's significantly more complicated than tabs, so it didn't make it for launch -- but I'd love to serve all my musician brothers instead of just guitarists. :-)

Actually I checked with the dictionary before posting, because I had that same concern. (I was a newspaper copyeditor for a while.) Postmortem can mean "any analysis following an event." It's not just for death.
