I'd do it on a case by case basis. I think you can probably get a good idea in a lot of cases whether people will recommend you without any incentive.

I can't imagine a better way to promote your services than through word of mouth. Might be worth it to offer discounts/rebates if your customers recommend new leads.

That is very generous, even considering this is a Sunday night. I think it'll be gone by 9am.

For real. Although YC is certainly a great judge of talent and predictor of success, they aren't the be all and end all, and are forced to rely on a lot of proxies/indicators in making their decisions. Give it a go yourself!

I find GTD extremely attractive, but any attempt to implement it in my life (and I've tried a few times), has been an abject failure. A few things I've found helpful, though, to minimizing time-wasting generally are: 1) Stop playing video g

I actually found this quite interesting. Although most people would love to grow virally through word of mouth, top search rankings bring in enormous amounts of traffic day after day. I know of blogs that haven't updated in years that still

I think the author has a point, but I think hackers are guilty of similar behavior regarding legal and finance expertise, both of which are critically important in keeping and profiting (respectively) from your hacking. I think it's really

The consensus seems to be that this doesn't qualify as Hacker News, but I tend to think that a large percentage of the users of this board can empathize with this boy. I certainly went through some of this (though not nearly as much, and at

Right, that assumes the proceeds of the loan are redeposited into the banking system. If instead the money remains in circulation or is otherwise kept in physical form, the multiplication stops.

Yep. I actually was somewhat credulous until he got fractional reserve banking backwards (getting a $1000 deposit with a 10% reserve requirement means you can lend out $900 of it, not that you can magically lend out $9000 that you don't hav

If you don't understand tax or your situation is relatively complex, I guess go to a well-recommended accountant. Otherwise, TurboTax is excellent (make sure to buy the version that corresponds to what you need to report, and also be on the

I agree it is an inapt comparison, but the article is a good read if you construe that phrase as "a really, really bad global recession" rather than an attention-grabbing historical reference.

Good ideas are good ideas in any market. Stay frugal and lean and aim for profitability without any outside investment, and you'll do fine...or fail, but at least you won't be too scarred from the experience.

I'd agree it's not even close to Hacker News per se, but this is a big enough deal I'd say it belongs.

That works, except then I guess the hole was not making it clear enough that you were talking about utility rather than expected value. The problem with your response, and the reason that I don't really see it as a good explanation, is that

I read the union essay a while ago, but your failure to sufficiently consider risk-aversion in this one was a major hole. I don't mean to really criticize that much, you write consistently great stuff.

yep, immediately thought of that too. PG writes VERY good stuff most of the time and is very smart about a lot of things, but when he strays into areas in which he is not well versed (the unions essay comes to mind), he ends up writing piec
