The word hacker has been twisted into oblivion. Just assume that any mention to 'hacker' in Hacker News has nothing to do with hacking, but with entrepreneurship.

I have to nitpick here and say that I don't believe this is at all a common thing in Europe. It is true that smaller towns tend to have this feeling of community to them, but I find it hard to find it anywhere with more than a couple t

I don't believe there is any reason to go to those extremes. Proper Object-orientation and well structured context can go a long way. I'm not dropping a language just because of how functions are defined.

While Windows's functionality in general is indeed pretty monolithic, you are generally wrong. In fact, there is (I believe since Windows Server 2008[1][1]) an installation method to get Windows without any GUI. In fact examples like W

Yeah I mean, it's not like the advent of soap and the generalisation of it's use (along general hygiene) revolutionised the world or anything. All those people cleaning their clothes with soap on the river in the 16th century were

Are you serious? If you are hanging a 1.5-meter long painting and you go off by 2.7 degrees (not %, by the way, that would be FAR worse) on the angle, one side will be around 7 centimetres higher that the other. This is a serious screw up.

You see, there is this thing called historical reasons for things to happen. That post was actually very entertaining and informative.

Aside from the cringeworthy meme thing, the pricing seems really, really nice :D.

What this article leads me to think is that, if we managed to create a thin elastic tight-fitting suit that compressed the body with the equivalent pressure of Earth's atmosphere, the issues with lung overpressure would be negated and

I assume in the original recipe the color wasn't added, but was a consequence of how it was produced then.

I use my own certificates internally, of course. I just want to prevent eavesdropping, so it's good enough, and I'm sure the NSA doesn't have my keys. The problem is, of course, browsers won't have you as a trusted root,

Well, yes, you are right. Still, a patent war in the US can have worldwide consequences.

Nice, every single network device ever with a web interface (think of your home's router) infringes this patent. This is plainly bullshit. PS: Of course also printers, but I feel like that is what they were actually trying to patent.

Seems like you can guess by the titles of each session here: http://interactive-cologne.com/schedule/ . If they are en German I'd assume the talk is in German, etc.

Any idea of what sort of medium could the NSA be using to store such an absurd amount of data? Maybe robotized tapes? I doubt they are doing it either in hard drives nor solid state. Maybe the NSA has access to one of those high-density hol

There has to be a trick here. I mean I understand a business model based in most customers consuming additional services (like the $10 voice plan), but I'd just go around with my pockets full of SIM cards for the iPad.
