This is a great insight into how people actually search and use apps. It makes the case for free-to-download with in-app purchases. People won't think twice about downloading a free app to try it out, and if they like it, they'll spend the

Before iOS 5 - the first to overdo skuemorphism - the last major design hoopla was when Apple couldn't decide on a single on windowing theme. It was brush-metal, then just white, then just gray, then all of them at the same time in differen

I gave up on Guy Kawasaki when all he would ever talk about is AllTop without it ever being obvious why AllTop matters.

This misses the point that the native OS X Twitter client is awesome. It allows you to easily manage multiple accounts. That's not something the Twitter website does.

I was really enjoying the lack of political posts on Hacker News. Everywhere else on the Internet is inundated with blood pressure-raising political opinions. Now the sewage seems to have seeped in here to...

Admittedly, a single timezone for the world might be a bit far fetched. But there's nothing intuitive about 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in a hour, then all of a sudden 24 hours in a day, and roughly 4.3 weeks in a month or somewhere

I was hoping this was a more radical proposal like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swatch_Internet_Time was. Our current way of measuring time is absurd. It starts as base 1000 with milliseconds, then base 60 with seconds and minutes, then 2

Yeah, I agree. The app is an interesting take on productivity. I haven't seen anything that does countdowns. But my initial reaction was "whoa, terrible font". Also try left justifying the labels and have the uinavbar label font match.

I program mostly in Objective-C nowadays, but I started professionally with PHP. When I first started Objective-C, I found it really constricting in comparison. In PHP you can do things a thousand ways, most of the terrible. In Objective-C,

$200 seems low, but that might would it take to build marketshare today. Plus, Microsoft has experience selling their hardware at a loss with the XBox. I wonder how Apple would react to this.

Apple owes a lot of its comeback to hackers and open source advocates. It's good to see them participating. They certainly need to maintain goodwill with open source hackers to continue succeeding. Their current locked-down culture seems so

Using a song to parody something besides the song isn't fair use. If the song is used to parody the song itself or the artist, yes, but not to parody something completely unrelated. If that were the case, rappers could parody a police commi

You have to do it on the server. And it's a pain to implement correctly, full of cryptic error codes. I imagine many developers skip it since it's not required by Apple.

I totally agree, the best practice is to validate transactions before delivering content. It wasn't clear from the article if the method could bypass that. It would have to provide valid transaction ids to the app developer's server. That s
