Sure, I thought this was a common experience, and I’d love to hear how you get around it. The tidyverse is absolutely full of breaking changes. Two big ones off of the top of my head: dropping underscore functions like mutate_, and turning

R’s package ecosystem is creaky and brittle even for statistics and visualization. I don’t think “misaligned with the original vision” is really relevant. Like, it has nothing to do with someone making a package to work with music in R. Not

But what about rolling back someone else’s installation? What if you’re depending on a different user that has a buggy installation?

Breaking changes aren’t only an issue with centralization. A breaking change with git itself would mess up your decentralized scenario as well.

BigQuery does support ML. But the pricing is kind of a racket ($250/TB) so I’ll stick to modeling in R/python. Which I guess reinforces your point. I wonder who pays for this. https://cloud.google.com/bigquery-ml&#

As I understand it, OSX is more efficient with memory compression, another variable to keep in mind. I often work with large sparse matrices (which can be compressed well) and I’ve loaded up a 500 GB matrix into 64 GB of memory (although ju

Oh I was thinking the opposite. I work between Monday and Friday, that’s a closed boundary. I have between 5 and 10 oranges, another closed boundary.

Your car still runs on gas and your phone still runs on electricity. I think this statement is overly generous to car manufacturers, who rarely provide software updates. Is that not motivated by an analogous planned obsolescence?

I thought the BETWEEN boundaries are always closed. Isn’t that pretty clear? If you’re worried about date part precision in that comparison, you can always TRUNC before you BETWEEN.

I’m wondering, do you share this frustration with car manufacturers? Each new car is incrementally a small upgrade, but accumulated over a few years, makes for a worthy improvement. Those incremental upgrades I don’t buy don’t make anything

The NPM one is fun now, but man that was a frustrating one when it was happening. Explaining to people I couldn’t deploy the app because NPM decided it was a teapot. Error messages do not need to be silly.

This is a very interesting project, but you need to stop likening it to a Bloomberg terminal. By doing so, it comes off as a letdown by doing so little, rather than being impressive for doing so much with open source. https://new

“Alexa, watch Daredevil” is much easier than turning the TV on, opening Netflix, and searching for the show. The remote can then be for just pause/play or volume.

Great counterpoint. I knew the Fed was purchasing a lot of bonds, but I had not grasped the scale of it. I didn’t think it would be that much higher than 08. The Brigewater article would have been a lot stronger with that $7 T figure.

“Nobody wants bonds because the yields are too low” is basically the same statement as “nobody goes to that restaurant because it’s too crowded.”
