He’s just doing it the Android way, separate user accounts for each application/binary. The one critical thing with running as root in my mind is clobbering some storage in /dev. Elsewhere in this thread the benefits are described

I bet most cars are used most times in traffic, hence the traffic. Although you can try to get through it avoiding the brakes, ’round here if you leave any kind of gap ahead of you, you’re gonna be slamming on the brakes instead of graduall

Their margins actually did go up but it’s kinda hilarious when you see it — they’re squeaking out ~3% these days while it was a razor thin 1.x% before. Yup that’s an extra buck fitty on your $100 of groceries
