The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is pretty good. Stranger in a Strange Land is decent. Neither is a juvenile...

He wrote a lot of stories I loved. And then, early 1970s or so onwards, everything he wrote was awful.

Valid. I'm skeptical that this makes it a winning strategy, but it's conceivable.

Yeah, I agree, but reddit also doesn't have the same skin in the game, hence the prior comment.

Isn't that effectively what limiting a google search to reddit does? Not that I'm convinced it will keep working, since reddit isn't really a vendor in the same sense, and doesn't have those incentives.

This is something I notice in advertising generally: whatever they most emphasize is least likely to be true about the product (e.g., the "great taste" of McDonald's).

There is a perfectly good solution, and some people use it: don't buy from unknown vendors. If you buy a product from one of a few well-known companies in that space, they have a big investment in their brand, and are much less likely

I've hit this many, many times, but I'm not sure I can easily reproduce it. Tends to happen when there are more search terms, in my experience.

It can have this problem even if you are not nonbinary. Buy a few toe rings and have it decide you're a woman...

Same experience. What's even more mystifying is that often it is for items that no human would be likely to be buying many copies of in a short span of time (high ticket items, or items where you probably don't need more than one)

The argument in the first example is just wrong. 1) His value might be that it looks like there is a security guard on duty, and that a) encourages customers, b) discourages robbers. A rock cannot do that. 2) He could do that, but he probab

The US probably needs to view chips as a national security issue and proceed accordingly... meaning, move more manufacturing here. It will raise prices and hurt the economy, probably, so I can understand the reluctance. Nothing is easy.

Well said. Periodically, I try to turn ad-blocking off because of my sympathies for various web sites. I always turn it back on. The web is now unusable without ad-blocking, at least for me.

No, it's really not even arguable. Lots and lots of software is written in business contexts where the cost of developing reliable code is a lot more important than its performance. Not everything is a commercial product aimed at a wid

While maybe theoretically of interest, it is far afield of the pragmatic considerations that underlie the paper: worked on operating systems in common use TODAY.

We have options, and options imply choices and therefore morality. I see lots wrong with it, since it creates pain and bad life experiences. This bothers me. But that's also a choice, of what kind of morality you embrace.

Yes, the problem was that to read Perl you had to know every way to express things, and Perl was much, much too flexible there. I wrote a bunch of Perl in the early 2000s and I hated it. Both Ruby and Python were far superior. Even Java was

I am curious what Canadians think of this argument. Does it seem true? It's hard for me, a USA resident who doesn't follow the CBC, to really evaluate.

The politics of the article were intemperate and confusing. The author complains about state regulation but blames the Biden administration? What? Not very impressed.
