I think it is obviously true that they have worked hard and built great devices. That was evident even when they only sold products for gaming. But this is what most companies do, or try to do: take their core products and invest in making

Hire experts and have it be reported as "waste" and hear complaints in Congress about government waste. We want government to be cheap. You get what you pay for.

Also, on a pragmatic level... I think an ecology built around scripting in multiple languages (because you have to support emacs lisp -- that's what things are written in now) will actually make it more confusing to do future develop

^This.Maybe part of the problem is that I've been around a while, and already have a bunch of habits around writing, and one of them is that I like to edit while I write, because writing is an attempt to work out what I actually th

Being honest doesn't pay as well. If it did, they would just raise the price. They are hoping you don't notice.

Of course, regulators (e.g., in the EU) could say no to some of these trends.

Just an idiom note: It's "intents and purposes" not "intensive purposes". Easy to mis-hear, but something you want to remember before it makes you look ill-educated in a work memo.

You will lose that fear if you are miserable long enough. I went through a divorce (and subsequent estrangement from my child) that left me deeply depressed and devastated. The depression eventually lifted, but the bleakness changed me in a

Spotify has been a disaster, but unless the artists walk away (very hard to do), I don't see our political system as caring enough to do anything about it.

Yes, that would actually be much more useful to me than what stackoverflow is. A vast number of the questions found that can be easily answered by RTFM and/or doing some direct experimentation. The harder ones would be more useful.

Many, many things are wrong with stackoverflow. Insisting that every discussion be factual and opinion-free pushes you deep into the McNamara fallacy of believing that things that cannot easily be quantified don't matter. It's a s

The best two books I read in the last year-ish are "The Golden Notebook" (novel by Doris Lessing) and "The Soul of a New Machine" by Tracy Kidder. Best tech book has been "Designing Data-Intensive Applications"

When you see that people are going to get thrown under the bus, it is prudent to not be in the vicinity. You can't stop managers from doing it, but you can stop volunteering to be one of them.

The whole "click once on the app for it to wake up, click again for it to know which window you wanted" makes using Mac OS highly unpleasant on a daily basis. Yes, I'm on Mac OS, and no, I don't like it.

It's not the correct reaction but it's a predictable reaction. Academia has some huge problems with how they measure success and how they police academic integrity. The incentives make this outcome likely.

You vastly underestimate the complexity involved. Also, new attacks get discovered that were not even dreamed 20 years ago. There is no "just get it right" when right is measured by what we know, and that keeps changing.
